Is Upen Patel back in the world of films? Looks like that is indeed the case, what with the hunky actor, who had been in the U.K. for quite some time now, making frequent visits to India in the last few weeks. As per sources, Upen has bagged a biggie which happens to be none less than a film with director Shankar.
"For quite some time Shankar has been looking for an actor with a powerful built to take on the lead actor Vikram for his film titled I. As an arch nemesis, Upen fitted the bill. The film is a musical romantic thriller and as per the plot, both are supposed to clash due to common love interest. There would be heavy dose of action involved and Upen seems like just the right personality to take on Vikram, who is quite a heavy weight himself. Pun intended", informs a source.
Apparently, Upen was frequently spotted being in and out of Shankar's office in Chennai till just a few days back. He flied down from the U.K. just for these visits and didn't even meet people in Mumbai.
"After Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009), a superhit, Upen returned to the U.K. and studied filmmaking amongst other things", a source adds, "He wanted his comeback into the world of films as a massive affair. When he realised that Shankar was scouting for actors, he immediately got into a conversation with the filmmaker. Language doesn't matter to him and even though the film is being made in Tamil and Telugu, Upen is fine because the characterisation is very personality driven."
I, which is supposedly based on a political subject of' cash for votes' scam would also be dubbed in Hindi, just as has been the case with Shankar's Endhiran (as Robot), Sivaji, Anniyan (as Aparichit), Jeans, Indian (as Hindustani) and Kadhalan (as Humse Hai Muqabla). No wonder, Upen is excited since the film would be a triple whammy for him, what with the comeback bringing him closer to Tamil, Telugu and obviously rest of the country through the Hindi release.
Meanwhile there has been some to-and-fro for the film's leading lady with Amy Jackson (last seen in Ekk Deewana Tha) apparently replacing Samantha (again, seen in a small role in Ekk Deewana Tha). However a formal announcement around that is yet to be made. What is confirmed though is that the film would have a musical score by A.R. Rahman.
Upen Patel was unavailable for comments. Perhaps he wants his makers to do all the talking even though our sources indicate that he indeed is the chosen one.
