Time Movies' Kismat starring Bobby Deol & Priyanka Chopra, which is releasing this month, will be satellite-transmitted, direct-to-theatre in some of New Delhi's digital theatres. The reception at the digital theatres will be through a dish antenna.
Known as E-cinema, this digital distribution and exhibition of films was successfully tested at Wave Multimedia in Ghaziabad last week, with a 40-minute screening of Tere Naam. Implementing this technology means there will be no time lag between the release of movies in metros and smaller towns. Theatres screening satellite-transmitted movies need to invest in digital projectors, servers and Ku-band receivers.
Earlier the digital distribution of Bollywood films started in 2003 with The Hero, with hard disks being sent physically to digital cinema halls.
