Tabu’s Take On ‘Maqbool’

Not many are aware that the role Pankaj Kapur has enacted in MAQBOOL was initially offered to Naseeruddin Shah, but the actor felt that he was more suited for the cop’s character [eventually enacted by him!]. It was Naseer who suggested Pankaj’s name to Vishal Bhardwaj, who not only accepted the role, but also lent credibility to it. Similarly, Vishal Bhardwaj had approached Akshay Kumar with the offer of enacting the title role in MAQBOOL [which has been portrayed brilliantly by Irrfan Khan], but the actor turned down the offer due to reasons best known to him. The only person who stuck to Vishal and his film was Tabu. I got hooked the moment Vishal narrated the story to me, the gifted actress tells me, I had a gut feeling that he’d [Vishal] make an amazing film and I felt vindicated when I saw the final product. Incidentally, Tabu is not the only person who seems to be singing praises of Vishal and his film. A few days ago, a closed-door preview show of the film was held for the likes of Karan Johar and Hrithik Roshan and the reaction was overwhelming. Back to Tabu So what was it like enacting the complex character? It was tough, she reveals, I had to be alert all the while, it was a complex role. The lady instigates her lover to revolt against his godfather and the duo is guilt-ridden subsequently. It has so much to offer to an actor. Call it a coincidence, Tabu has never shied of working with new talent she worked with Madhur Bhandarkar [CHANDNI BAR] after his debut film TRISHAKTI sank at the box-office; she signed Vishal’s MAQBOOL even though he had just one film [MAKDEE] to his credit; she gave the ‘go-ahead’ to MEENAXI despite the fact that M.F. Hussain has yet to prove himself as a film-maker [his directorial debut GAJA GAMINI proved a damp squib at the b.o.]. That’s quite an observation, she laughs, But, seriously, the box-office credentials of a film-maker are secondary when I read the script. I look at a film purely to satisfy my needs as an actor. Whether or not it works at the box-office is irrelevant.
