Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai had made inroads in the music industry way back when he launched his film Kisna‘s music under his banner Mukta Music. Apparently, Ghai, who is known for his film’s music, is all set to re- launch his music label with his next directorial venture Kaanchi.
Mukta Music after successfully backing the music distribution of films like Kisna, Jogger’s Park and Iqbal went silent and is now geared up to create a stir in the music market again. “My film’s music has always been a hit. Our films – Karz, Hero, Ram Lakhan, Khalnayak, Taal and Yaadein had very successful music. People told me long ago, when I first got into production, that I should launch a music arm for my company. But my focus was different then,” said Ghai.
He further added, “The music industry has evolved a great deal since the ’70s and ’80s. Earlier, there would be two companies involved with the music of a film. While producers held the rights to their songs in perpetuity, they relinquished them once they sold their rights to a music company. We are the producers of our films, so we decided that we should protect all our revenues. Everyone is and should be entitled to their revenue. This is purely because film music can be easily exploited many times over.”
When quizzed about his decision to re-launch the label, Ghai said confidently, “Now that we are making Kaanchi, which is a big musical thriller, and we are going all out with the film, we thought this would be the best time to re-launch the music arm. We have decided to ramp up our distribution, exhibition and production business a great deal. The music industry has become so much more transparent. Online sales are totally accounted for. Earlier, we didn’t have any idea what kind of revenue our music was fetching. Music companies would buy the rights outright and thereafter we had no clue who was doing what with the music sales.”
Apart from releasing the music for his home production- Mukta Arts, Mukta Music also looks forward to widening its horizon and produce, acquire and distribute music under this label. “We plan to acquire the music of other producers and production houses; get talent on board; provide creative and business solutions as well as advice to new talent; and form a bridge between producers and the right talent. It will look into almost all the aspects of music”, comments the filmmaker.
