Rs. 50 cr Copyright infringement case filed against makers of Bajrangi Bhaijaan

Bollywood News

This year's biggest hit the Salman Khan - Kareena Kapoor starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan that released on Eid seems to have run into trouble. In fact the makers of the film which created waves at the box office are facing a Rs. 50 crore copyright infringement law suit that claims the entire plot line and some locations were blatantly inspired from another script.

The suit filed in the Bombay High Court by director and TV producer Mahim Joshi, alleges the infringement is `career damaging', since he intended his script and subsequent film to be his launch project in the industry. As per Joshi's claims, the story of Bajrangi Bhaijaan is grounds for a 100% infringement along with prominent similarities in the screenplay, and locations. Along with his petition to the High Court, Joshi has also furbished documents that include detailed comparisons of the film's scenes and the sequences shot by Joshi.

As per Joshi, he claims that he had registered his story in July 2007 with the Indian Film and Television Producers Council as well as the Association of Motion Pictures and TV Programme Producers. Following which he had approached Yashi Multi Media (YMM), a production house owned by Suresh and Vivek Oberoi to produce the film. However after the five year exclusive contract with YMM expired with the film failing to take off, Joshi had approached other production houses including Viacom 18, of which Parveez Shaikha, who has been given joint credit for the movie's screenplay, was a part of.

Following this, in its hearing held on Thursday the High Court bench presided by Justice Gautam Patel, has directed all parties including producers Rockline Venkatesh, Rajessh Bhatt and Salman Khan, a co-producer, writer KV Vijayendra Prasad and director Kabir Khan, to maintain accounts of business with respect to the movie. It also directed all respondents to file their replies by October 21. Further the court remarked that there did seem to be some similarity between the two and that the suit was a `passionate plaint'.
