Earlier we had reported that Rani Mukerji's recently released film Mardaani had received a tax free status in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Later we had reported that Rani Mukerji had even requested the Mahahrashtra government to grant the film a tax free status.
However, now we hear that despite the Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan watching the film and wanting to declare it as tax free, the film will not have that benefit in the state. The reason behind this is the state rule that mandates that a film that has been rated with an 'A' certificate cannot get a tax free status within the state.
On the other hand, it was also learnt that Rani Mukerji on behest of various NGOs and audiences would be submitting the film to the censors for recertification so as to obtain a 'U/A' certificate, enabling it to reach the segment of audience above 12 years old. Interestingly, if the film does receive this new censor certificate, chances of the film being made tax free in Maharashtra are highly likely.
