Deepika Padukone, who was always written about for her stunning looks, is making heads turn this time. Post COCKTAIL, people can't stop talking about her super act in the film. Everyone seems besotted by her performance: Hard-nosed critics, reputed film-makers, the opinion-makers who hold weight in film circles and most importantly, the cine-going audience, who pronounce the real verdict when a film opens on Friday. "I am flooded with phone calls and sms-es ever since COCKTAIL released. I am feeling elated," Deepika can't hide her excitement. She's ecstatic!
Though Deepika has been an integral part of several prominent films in the past, including OM SHANTI OM and LOVE AAJ KAL, two films that tapped her talent, COCKTAIL has brought about a major turnaround in her career. Most importantly, it has made people sit and notice her talent. "This [the immense praise coming her way] is something I always craved for, but, perhaps, I didn't invest so much hard work in my earlier films. That's how I look at it. I am glad Imtiaz Ali wrote the film and Homi Adajania directed it with so much conviction. An actor rarely gets such challenging opportunities these days. I feel blessed," Deepika tells me.
The success of COCKTAIL is another reason to celebrate. "Very frankly, the box-office outcome did not cross my mind during the making of this film. But I was asked the mandatory questions prior to its release: Will it be a success? Will it touch 100 crores? I had emotionally invested so much in this film. I had surrendered to the character completely. All I craved for was appreciation for my hard work. My belief has turned into a reality," Deepika states with utmost honesty.
Deepika's forthcoming films include Abbas-Mustan's RACE-2 [with Saif again] and Ayan Mukerji's YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI [with Ranbir Kapoor], besides a film with Rajnikant, KOCHADAIYAAN. "The success of COCKTAIL has given me the motivation to experiment with challenging roles. Not that I didn't experiment in the past, but the success of COCKTAIL has given me the much-needed fillip. It has given me the confidence to do what I want to do," Deepika says.
The conversation would be incomplete without asking her about CHENNAI EXPRESS. Reportedly, SRK and Rohit Shetty are keen that Deepika act in this film. "This team [Shah Rukh and Rohit] is special. I would love to work with them. But it's too early to talk about it," Deepika replies.
