PETA miffed with Ranveer Singh’s ad for inner wear

Ranveer Singh, who is seen in his elements in the latest commercial for Rupa Frontline, has been caught up in a controversy. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals) is rather upset over the fact that the actor was seen hitting a fake shark in the ad in order to save a girl. Taking action against the commercial, PETA has approached the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) and Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) and have asked to them to take necessary steps against the ad.

Poorva Joshipura, CEO, PETA India stated that though she is aware that the 'thrashing scene of the shark' wasn't an intentional move by the actor or the makers of the commercial, it creates a completely dangerous impression of the plight of sharks. Poorva further added that despite the fact that the actor used a dummy shark in the ad, this will only prove to be a further threat to the existence of this already endangered species. She clarified that PETA is against the depiction of animal as a 'cruel and fearful' living being and will also condemn ads that will have humans involved in the act of cruelty being depicted as brave.

On the other hand, Mukesh Agarwal, spokesperson of Rupa & Co has not only accepted these accusations but has even promised to add a disclaimer stating that no animals were hurt in the process. However, PETA is not ready to accept it and has asked the makers of the commercial to chop off the scene where Ranveer Singh is hitting the shark. Claiming it as an encouragement towards cruelty on animals, Poorva mentioned that the ad violates the 2012 BCCC advisory against unhelpful depiction of animals on television.
