“One of my favourite scenes in Ra.One couldn’t be shot” – Arjun Rampal

Arjun Rampal has walked away with the best reviews for his act in Ra.One. But most Ra.One watchers have complained about the limited screen-space provided to the actor. Although he plays the arch-villain he was barely seen on screen for 15 minutes.

Says Arjun,”Thank God they’ve liked me. The reaction I’m getting everywhere is that there’s too little of me. I don’t know how many people got the point. But even when Ra.One is in his metallic phase the voice is mine. So my character was built up long before I was actually seen on screen. But I layered my voice four times over, so people didn’t recognize me. But there was a buildup.”

He then admits he was disappointed by his character’s playing-time. “When I saw the film I realized maybe I should have come a bit earlier. All the scenes that I shot were there. But many scenes were added later, so my entry got a bit prolonged.”

Arjun admits there were scenes that they didn’t shoot. “Yes, there were a few scenes that we were going to shoot, but didn’t. Now I feel we should have shot them.”

Arjun specially regrets not shooting one particularly decisive sequence. “It was Shah Rukh‘s and my favourite scene. I don’t know why we didn’t shoot it. Maybe there were time constraints. I actually shot my portions earlier because I had to shave my head and then grow back my hair for other commitments. Anyway my scene in Ra.One that I really miss showed my character strolling in Dharavi where he sees a drunkard beating his wife, then he sees a guy selling drugs. Then suddenly a girl comes to him from behind. He turns around scans her. She gets scared and runs away. Then I had to turn around and say, ‘Aur log Ra.One ko bhoola kaise?’ It was my favourite scene and Shah Rukh loved it because that scene embodies my character’s philosophy. When I saw the film I missed that scene the most.”

Arjun blames it on time constraints. “The team had to go off to London to shoot. At the end of the day it was a special effects film and we were constantly working against time.”

However the actor is not displeased with the reviews of Ra.One. “One can’t please everybody. More than the fact that they liked my performance it’s important for audiences to love the film. A performance cannot work in isolation. The film gave me an opportunity to do something different. I see huge numbers happening. You had to see the response at the premieres in Dubai and London. Unfortunately I had to return from London to prepare for my Formula 1 party at my club in Delhi, so I couldn’t attend the Toronto and the Los Angeles premieres.”
