The current trend when it comes to film distribution highly favours multiplexes across the country in terms of releasing smaller films. The recent cases that have brought this issue to the forefront are David Dhawan's Chasme Baddoor, and Y-Films' Mere Dad Ki Maruti. However, the latest to bear the brunt of the Cineplex stubbornness is the recently release Rohan Sippy film Nautanki Saala.
A couple of days ago, just prior to the film's release, the industry was abuzz with talk of the dispute between the makers of Nautanki Saala and leading multiplex chain PVR. The reason behind the dispute was the profit sharing ratio that was being demanded by the Cineplex chain, which severely put a strain on the filmmakers and audiences.
However, it is learnt that the dispute has since been resolved, though Sippy's film did suffer a setback in terms of first day collections. Speaking to Taran Adarsh, who elaborates on the dilemma saying, "If you see Nautanki Saala managed to generate about Rs 3.25 crores on Friday, now the reason for this was the lack of listing in the newspapers or anywhere else for that matter. From a layman's point of view, whenever a film is releasing there are some listings and advertisements that appear, however due to this dispute the makers of Nautanki Saala suffered a setback since the matter was resolved unfortunately after the publication timings."
Adding to Taran's views, Rohan Sippy reiterates the issue, "The entire issue got resolved on Thursday morning, by that time we had already missed the deadlines for the print ads and opening advance bookings on Thursday. Besides keeping in mind that PVR and Cinemax are today the biggest Cineplex chains in the country, we did miss out on a big way for the first day."
However, an unfazed Rohan keeps his optimistic charm alive, "Though we may have open on a less than intended note, word of mouth is working for the film. We are hoping that this setback does not affect the film too much. Besides now if you see there are people still coming in for the evening shows, so yes we are picking up and I really feel that more than just one day it's more of a weekend figures that really show how the film is doing, since that really tells you how a film is doing."
