Minister of I&B declines to accept Pahlaj Nihalani’s list of cuss-word list

It has come as a sigh of relief for filmmakers that the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Rajyavardhan Rathore has now announced that Bollywood will not be required to follow the cuss word list made by the new chief of the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Pahlaj Nihalani. The decision came after certain reputed filmmakers decided to consult the Ministry of I&B after Pahlaj passed the order of banning cuss words from films.

Pahlaj Nihalani decided to take matters into his own hands when films started using many cuss words as a part of the screenplay and he ordered the ban of over 28 words to be used in the film. It included words like ‘harami’, ‘bastard’ and he even refused to allow the ‘Bombay’ to be a part of the film because the city is now termed ‘Mumbai’. It further embroiled when the members of the censor board also opposed the order because the decision was taken by Pahlaj without their consent. Miffed over the matter, some of the Bollywood personalities which included Anurag Kashyap, Siddharth Roy Kapur, and Mukesh Bhatt among others had a consulting meeting with the I&B Ministry after which they reached to the conclusion that Bollywood can do away with the list and ‘ignore’ the order.

Happy about the decision, Anurag took to Twitter to post about it saying, “Super meeting with the ministry & super initiative of the Govt to develop an interface directly with working professionals of Film industry.” He further added, “Talked about everything from a ratings board to self regulation and left with a lot of hope and positivity.”

Many filmmakers and Bollywood personalities were of the opinion that Pahlaj Nihalani’s decision may hamper the creative freedom of writers and directors. Now, Minister Rathore has also promised that he will also look into other concerned matters including the reviewing of the Cinematograph Act of 1952.
