A trend that has caught on in a big way is of making medium-budget films. Almost every film-maker is into planning a film that wouldn't cost him more than Rs. 3 to 4 to 5 crores to make. Gone are the days when a producer proudly claimed to have sold his film for Rs. 3 crores per circuit, a top producer tells me, Today, the price is decided at the time of release. What the distributor eventually pays, is the final price of the film. That explains why medium-budget films are being planned by not just the Bhatts (Mukesh and Mahesh) and Ramgopal Varma, but also by reputed productions houses such as Mukta Arts, Tips, Boney Kapoor and Nitin Manmohan.
