Manna Dey passes away at 94

The world of Bollywood was a state of utter shock when it woke up today with the news that stated the sad demise of the legendary singer Manna Dey. The 94 year old singer who passed away at 3.50am this morning at Bengaluru had been ailing for some time. Recently he was admitted to a local hospital in Bengaluru following respiratory ailment and renal failure. He was on ventilator support for some time.


Looking back at history, not many know that Manna Dey was christened by his parents as Probodh Chandra Dey. Reports have it that his tryst with singing started when he was still in school, wherein during the lunch breaks, he used to beat the tables of the classroom and sing aloud to entertain his fellow friends. Manna Dey, who started his career in playback singing with the film Tamanna in 1943, has to his credit of singing both for a Bengali and a Marathi film of the same name and storyline - Amar Bhupali. Till date, he had lent his mellifluous voice to more than 4000 songs, majority of them have been chartbusters. In the year 2007, he was conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the country's highest honour in cinema.


His body would be kept for final farewell at Ravindra Kala Kshetra. Bollywood Hungama offers its deepest condolences to the Dey family and whole heartedly prays for the departed man's soul to rest in eternal peace.
