Local people from Sri Lanka cast in Bombay Velvet

He captured the gruesome brutality of a small town named Wasseypur in his films Gangs of Wasseypur I &II and now Anurag Kashyap is all set to enter a complete commercial space with Bombay Velvet that will present Mumbai in a different era altogether.

However, a lot about the movie including the fact that it brings together Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma for the first time is very special. Despite the fact that the film represents the most popular Indian city, it was not shot in India. Bombay Velvet is completely shot in Sri Lanka where a huge set was erected that looks similar to the Bombay of the 60s. Also, a novel technique was adapted for the casting of the film.

The makers decided to cast many Sri Lankans in the film and took a new route of finding the right people. To create awareness, various advertisements were placed in the newspapers about cast requirements. Since, the film will showcase the Bombay of the 60’s and its dynamic cosmopolitan life, consulates of India, Russia, USA & UK were approached to get Indian and foreign characters. Many tourists and foreigners from abroad who have settled in Sri Lanka were contacted to feature in the movie. Extensive on-ground exercise was conducted where local pubs and clubs were informed about the requirement.

Previously, when Anurag Kashyap was questioned about the reason behind placing Bombay in Sri Lanka, he had maintained that the sets here are expensive and moreover, the process of getting permissions is also very long. Hence, they decided to shift the location to Sri Lanka. Though it is a magnum opus for Anurag Kashyap, according to him, Bombay Velvet had to be made in a budget and now, casting locals seems to be yet another step to save extravagant costs.

Produced by Fox Star Studio and Phantom Films, Bombay Velvet also stars Karan Johar in a negative role and will see Raveena Tandon playing the role of a jazz singer. It will hit the theatres on November 28, 2014.
