The endless delay and the failure of GRAHAN at the box-office may have led people to believe that Jackie Shroff will never work with director Shashilal Nair again. Why, there were rumours in the industry that the relationship between Jackie and Shashi had soured following the dull response to the film. But we were in for a surprise when we learnt that Jackie had once again signed Shashi to direct a film for J.S.E.L.. But what surprised us all the more was the rumour that Shashi was signed to direct the film that was to be originally directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. "The news is partly true," Jackie tells us, adding, "I have definitely signed Shashi, but it is not the same film that was to be directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. Manjrekar is busy with other assignments, so I thought it best to start a project with Shashi in the intervening period." But is it the same film that Shashi was planning to produce and direct as NAAGRIK? "It is not that film either. It is an altogether new project. We are sitting on the subject and we'll be finalising the cast soon. But more than anything else, I want to prove that Shashi does not take years to complete a film, nor is he an expensive director." The great news is that Jackie has thrown an open challenge and is planning to finish the film in a span of nine months.
