IFFLA 2004 a Great Success

IFFLA 2004 wrapped up on April 18 with the sold-out North American premiere of Sudhir Mishra‘s HAZAARON KHWAISHEN AISI (A Thousand Dreams Such as These) at ArcLight Cinemas Hollywood! IFFLA attendance was up more than 15 percent over 2003, with an estimated 7,000 festivalgoers attending our five-day run at ArcLight Cinemas Hollywood, the official home of the festival. Additional sold-out programs included CHOKHER BALI (A Passion Play), MAQBOOL, A DAY IN THE LIGHT/UNTOUCHABLES VS. ARYANS, WHEN THE STORM CAME/THE DAY MY GOD DIED, VIRUMAANDI and MUGHAL-E-AZAM (The Great Mughal). For the first time, IFFLA offered competitive prize awards sponsored by Digiquest and conferred by three juries consisting of filmmakers, academics, journalists and industry representatives. The winners, announced during the Closing Night reception, were: * Best Feature: MAQBOOL, directed by Vishal Bharadwaj * Best Documentary: STARKISS: THE INDIAN CIRCUS GIRLS, directed by Jascha de Wilde and Chris Relleke. Honorable mention for Andrew Levine’s THE DAY MY GOD DIED * Best Short Film: THE BYPASS, directed by Amit Kumar Certainly, the sold-out Opening Night screening of Rituparno Ghosh’s sumptuously mounted period adaptation, CHOKHER BALI (A Passion Play), was one of the standout events. Mira Nair To Serve As Guest Director Of The 2004 Los Angeles Film Festival (June 17-26). As Guest Director, Nair will host a two-day filmmaker retreat, program a sidebar of films that have inspired her work, and attend opening night festivities. The 10th Annual Los Angeles Film Festival will present the best of independent American and International cinema. A complete festival line-up will be announced on May 4.
