‘Girl Friend’: Triangle with a difference

That Hindi cinema is getting bolder with each passing day is known to all. That more and more film-makers are taking that extra effort to provide different stuff to cinegoers is also known. Producer Harry Baweja and director Karan Razdan are a shining example of this statement. Some time back, this writer did a news-break of Harry planning to launch his son Harman in a futuristic film, the story of which is set in the year 2050. But before that Harry has begun filming his new film, which also defies the stereotype. Directed by Karan Razdan, the film, titled GIRL FRIEND and starring Aashish Chowdhry, Amrita Arora and Isha Koppikar in principal roles, is a love triangle with a difference. If you’re under the impression that it’s about two girls eyeing the same guy, you’re wrong. It’s about one girl [Amrita] being torn between her lover [Aashish] and her ‘girl friend’ [Isha]. Karan tells me, It’s natural to feel jealous if your best friend devotes more time to her lover. Except, in this case, Isha doesn’t take it lying down and reacts badly. Her ‘feelings’ for Amrita surface only towards the end and both Aashish and Amrita are caught unaware. Will the audience accept a different look at love triangles? Why not? Isn’t cinema evolving for better? Hasn’t the mindset of the common man undergone a change? And, most importantly, people like Isha do exist in society, don’t they? Karan counters. However, Karan denies that his film is inspired by any Hollywood film. Frankly, the issue is straight out of my life. When I was dating my girl friend, I could sense that her best buddy wasn’t too comfortable with the fact that she was spending more time with me. I could sense her feelings This particular incident stayed in my mind and one fine day, I decided to base my story around this issue, Karan divulges.
