It seems like the controversies surrounding Anurag Kashyap and Ekta Kapoor's upcoming drug drama Udta Punjab is not going to stop anytime soon. The film has created a major buzz since the trailer released. It took a drastic turn when the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) ordered over 90 cuts in the film over the use of abusive language and drug menace. Not only that, they have also ordered to remove all the references of the Punjab from the film and the title. This didn't go well with the makers of the film and decided to protest against censor board chief, Pahlaj Nahlani.
Filmmaker Akshoke Pandit calls out Pahlaj Nihalani and demands apologyA press conference was held that including lead actors of Udta Punjab Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt and many filmmakers from the Bollywood. The makers of the film addressed the controversy surrounding the film and how the cuts ordered will completely destroy the entire film. Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt called out Pahlaj Nihalani for making it hard for the filmmakers to take chances with their films because they are worried about the brutal censor cuts their films will have to go through.
Today, Pahlaj Nihalani gave an interview where he claimed that Udta Punjab was funded by Aam Aadmi Party (AAM) to defame Punjab. When filmmaker Ashoke Pandit got to hear about this accusation, he said that they condemn the statement given by Pahlaj Nihalani and demand an apology from him. It is an insult to all and the entire industry.
As of now, we can only wait to see what will be the movie's fate. Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, Udta Punjab also stars Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh and is slated to release on June 17, 2016.
