Evergreen star Dev Anand is least perturbed by the non-success of his last few films. That's part of life, he tells me at the prestigious Pune International Film Festival. And, like always, the enigmatic actor cum director is all set to embark on two fresh projects, one after another.
The first project, titled SONG OF LIFE, will be made in two versions English and Hindi. In fact, this will be the veteran's second attempt at trying to have a break through on the international scene, after GUIDE [made in two versions]. While the Hindi version of GUIDE is remembered as a classic, the English version failed to excite the Americans when released.
Coming back to SONG OF LIFE, the film revolves around the life of an international singer who is half Indian, half American the father is an accomplished musician in India and the girl is actually his child from an American woman.
However, Dev-saab denies that the film is based on the life of Norah Jones. The idea took shape when I read about Norah Jones, but the similarities end there. The film is not based on anyone's life, he clarifies.
The veteran has penned the script himself, but decided to give the draft to a U.S. writer to brush it up. Also, Dev-saab has had a meeting with Stevie Wonder to record songs for the film. I've given him the script, but am awaiting his response to it, he says.
Incidentally, Dev-saab has approached Lata Mangeshkar to record an international track for the film. It would be great if Lata-ji sings an international number, it'll be another feather in her cap, he says.
Also, Dev-saab has handed over the script to his Attorneys in the U.S., who will work on the economics of the film and then decide on the casting. Life is a challenge and I am ready to face it. This film indicates my growth as a human, as a film-maker, he adds. SONG OF LIFE is likely to roll in April 2004.
The second project Dev-saab is planning is titled BEAUTY QUEEN. I've yet to find the beauty queen for the film, he laughs. But there are so many title holders in the industry. But I want a new face, he shoots back, Naye chehro ke saath kaam karne ka ek alag hi maza hain.
BEAUTY QUEEN tells the story of a small-town girl aspires to be a beauty queen and the hardships she faces in order to fulfill her dreams.
