The Mumbai Police, for long under pressure to do something dramatic, have swooped down upon the latest blockbuster Chori Chori Chupke Chupke. They have written to the Intelligence Bureau and Income Tax department to investigate in detail the finances of the film. The film stars Salman, Preity Zinta, and Rani Mukherjee. It is directed by Abbas-Mastan, the pair with the magical touch and Bharat Shah is the financer of the film. M N Singh, Commissioner of Mumbai Police, said that amongst the few films suspected to be financed by the underworld, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke is one of them. The presence of Nadeem Rizvi as the producer has triggered off this suspicion. Nadeem is a relative newcomer.
Police wonder how could Nadeem raise the huge amount required for canning Chori Chori Chupke Chupke. They add that this film went on floors in 2000 and completed in 60 days while another Abbas Mastan project Ajnabee before Chori Chori Chupke Chupke is still in the studios, with the shoot incomplete. The slate of bulk dates given by all the stars in the film is another cause for suspicion. The police say that only films with 'connections' can get dates at a stretch from all the stars. In a stinging riposte, Nadeem Rizvi said that the presence of Bharat Shah, the granddaddy of Indian film financers, should be reassuring enough. He said that all the stars had been paid by cheque. Rani was paid Rs. 24 lakhs, Preity Zinta was paid Rs. 25 lakhs and Salman is being paid his committed amount of Rs. 150 lakhs in installments. Nadeem said that he got a good break because Salman put in a word for him with Bharat Shah and the stars.
Chori Chori Chupke Chupke financed by underworld?Bharat Shah, while refusing to discuss the financial details of the film said that as a professional, has come on board because he is convinced that the film will deliver. He challenged his detractors to find out even a whiff of hanky-panky in the film finances. The police are reported to be monitoring another unnamed top Bollywood actor who was in New Jersey recently. They claim that he met Abu Salem and agreed to do a film with him. The said film in on the floors now. They are also watching an actress rumored to be close to Abu Salem with interest. She is also acting in the film. It remains to be seen whether this unwelcome interest in Chori Chori Chupke Chupke creates a spanner in the works. Watch this space for more on this!
