Very recently, Madhur Bhandarkar took his Calendar Girls to the Revising Committee of the Censor Board and requested for a re-look of the film and grant a U/A certificate. He felt that an A certificate would restrict audience for the film and hence was even willing to renegotiate on the content in case there were any minor snipping suggested.
However, the Censors felt that if there were any cuts introduced, the film would lose its charm and core of the content. Hence, it was best for the film if it played in as it is.
"As a matter of fact it is a good development as Censors have shown their positive outlook around films that are bold and make a statement," informs our source. "Any snipping would have been an easy way out but then also not really forward thinking. In a way, Censors have conveyed the message that they are okay about such content in display, provided there is target audience set for it."
No wonder, Bhandarkar is taking this decision quite positively.
"As a filmmaker, you sometimes feel that a larger audience would be better for your product. However, as an outsider, when a body like Censors presents its point of view, it becomes an even more objective call," the source adds, "The very fact that Censors have liked the film and suggested Bhandarkar to retain the essence of Calendar Girls is positive news indeed."
With the decision well in place, Bhandarkar and his team are now finalizing the marketing and promotional campaign in a manner that suits the adult audience which has been marked for the film. The way it is being put together, rest assured there are a few shocks expected en route the film's September 25 release.
We tried contacting Madhur Bhandarkar and Censor chief Pahlaj Nihalani but they were unavailable for comment.
