“Who is Madhuri Dixit in front of me?” screams Sampat Pal, the founder of the famous Gulabi Gang, whose members wear pink saris. Gulabi Gang was founded in 2006 in response to domestic abuse and other violent acts against women. The reason for her anger is the announcement of the film titled Gulab Gang by Anubhav Sinha and Soumik Sen starring Madhuri Dixit.
Pal is angry because apparently neither did anyone meet her nor took her permission for this film. She has very clearly declared that the said film can’t be made without her approval. She is very upset and angry over Madhuri because she feels that people like her are making money while they (the Gulab gang members) are the ones who help the poor for free. What has further triggered her anger is that the film’s makers have staunchly denied any kind of connections between the film and the Gulabi Gang. To which, Pal retorted stating that everyone knows that there’s just one Gulab Gang that exists and that’s hers. She has threatened that if the film ever gets made; her gang will protest against the same and will go across the country and create trouble for the film’s makers.
She is also upset over the news that someone had met Madhuri on the gang’s behalf. She came out strong on this by stating that no one can meet Madhuri or the film makers on behalf of the gang simply by wearing a pink sari. Lastly she said that, she might think of taking the legal route and seek a ban on the film.
Gulab Gang is being readied for a March 8, 2013 release.
