No we are not talking about any of his advertising stints. The shooting schedule of Aamir Khan's film Rang De Basanti is proceeding in full swing in Northern India. One of the latest schedules was shot at Firoz Shah Kotla monument in Delhi. And for the scene Aamir Khan appeared in the garb of yesteryear freedom fighter and revolutionary Chandrashekhar Azad dressed in a khadi kurta and jacket and sporting razor sharp moustaches. With Aamir's getup, junior artists clad in as British soldiers and even some foreign artists present on the sets, one wonders whether the film Rang De Basanti is yet another period drama on Indian independence from Aamir Khan after The Rising. Moreover the title of the film Rang De Basanti, which was one of the famous catchlines of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, disciple of Chandrashekhar Azad, stresses more on the period possibility.
BUT the director of the film, Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra had confirmed that the film is neither a patriotic nor a period drama, when he had announced the film a year back. It's a contemporary film, set in today's times, Mehra had assured us then. So what is the actual scene?
Well, Rang De Basanti is the story of a British student (played by Alice Patten) who wants to make a documentary based on the diary of her grandfather. Her grandfather was a soldier in the British Army in the 1930's. She approaches BBC for funding her film but they refuse. So she comes to India and manages to pull together the cast for her movie from the students of Delhi University. Aamir Khan leads the group of students. So the scene perhaps seems like Aamir is playing the role of Chandrashekhar Azad in the documentary being made by Alice Patten in Rang De Basanti.
Only the filmmakers can enlighten us on this mix-up.
