1 film, 4 directors

Hindi cinema is truly evolving! Some time back, we broke the news of Ramgopal Varma hiring the services of six directors for six different stories of DARNA ZAROORI HAI, the sequel to the scary movie DARNA MANA HAI. In another path-breaking development, prominent directors Kundan Shah, Sudhir Mishra, Padam Kumar and Anurag Kashyap have joined hands to direct one film, to be produced by Padam Kumar’s Shree Shanaya Telefilms P. Ltd. Yes, you’ve read it right four directors will direct one film! In our film, one incident triggers off four different genres romance, comedy, emotions and action. We’ve agreed to compartmentalise the work, with each of us directing one segment, Padam tells me. However, the start and the climax [when all four stories merge into the finale] of the film will have four directors collectively calling the shots. We are having brain-storming sessions over the script, revising it over and over again, so that it leaves no room for discussions once we start filming. Besides, there won’t be any difference of opinion when we collectively film the climax. Besides, the four of us will work together on the post-production of the film, Padam adds. The filming process would be equally novel Each segment [genre] will be shot in a 10-day schedule, while the climax will be filmed in the course of a 2-day schedule. We intend shooting the four segments simultaneously, on four different locations, on the same dates. If all goes well, the shooting of the entire film will be wrapped up in 12 days flat, Padam divulges. The makers have already spoken to a couple of leading stars and the reactions have been overwhelming. They [stars] sounded excited at the prospects of completing their work under qualitative directors in a short span, Padam claims. Although Padam hasn’t finalised any star yet, he has decided to title the film KABHI KABHI MERE DIL MEIN KHAYAL AATA HAI. It’s a working title, he adds. If this experiment succeeds, Padam intends continuing with the trend of four/five directors directing one film and completing the entire shooting in a relatively short span. I hope to make at least one film every year on similar lines, if all goes well, he adds. Incidentally, Padam has decided to share the profits accrued from the film with all the directors this time around.
