Thodi Life Thoda Magic Review {1.5/5} & Review Rating
Pyaar, Life, Magic - There is a lot happening in spite of 'thoda thoda fight' when it comes to title war in Bollywood! If Yash Raj Films are ready with their Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, another film called Thodi Life Thoda Magic is also getting ready to release around the same time. However, in terms of scale and setting, this one has a smaller canvas with music by Vinay Tiwari and lyrics contributed by Sunil Jogi, Aanand L Rai and Irshad Kamil. Since there is hardly any awareness about the movie and the situations it deals with, one picks on the album with absolutely no clue around what to expect. In the end, even zero expectations do not help the cause either!
With the musical base being similar to the title song of Kal Ho Na Ho, the opening number Thoda Sa Gum Ho Thodi Khushi Ho is a Sonu Nigam rendered track that has lyrics by Sunil Jogi. A number about living life with an all around happiness and being content with what one gets, Thoda Sa Gum.. has philosophical undertones. This is a kind of song which should find a place throughout the film's narration as a part of the background score.
It later appears in a much slower 'sad version' which again has Sonu Nigam at the helm of affairs. This one in fact creates a record for being one of the longest composed songs ever as it lasts over 9 minutes. A relatively shorter 4 minutes 'remix version' appears in the album as well and turns out to be a nice livelier hear.
Director Aanand L Rai takes charge to write Zindagi Zindagi which again is a title song of sorts since it's lyrics include the words 'Thodi Life Thoda Magic'. A theme piece with a duration of a mere 80 seconds, it has Suhas and Saahil coming together for a number that celebrates life.
The next song to follow is Yeh Mast Hawa which belongs to the romantic genre and in spite of its overall setting being serene, it becomes boring after a point due to it's slow pacing. There isn't much exciting about this Shreya Ghoshal sung track which seems to be stuck in the early 90s time warp and fails to hold a listener's attention. While Vinay Tiwari pitches in a little with a line or two, Sonu Nigam makes an entry only 5 minutes into the song. Written by Irshad Kamil, Yeh Mast Hawa isn't a kind of number that you would want to put into a repeat mode and listen for hours!
Irshad Kamil's work is heard again in Tune Kahi Aur Maine Maani which is a Kailash Kher solo. A number about realization of love, it has a thorough Indian base and keeps a sad mood throughout. A strictly situational number which would in fact require a push to make an impression even along with the film's narrative, Tune Kahi... makes one start loosing interest in the album pretty fast, even as it's 'remix version' (was it really required?) comes at the very end of the album.
The way Maana Yeh Aaj Hamne begins, it gives an impression of a melody that is based on a style that was prevalent in the 60s and later adapted by Nadeem Shravan. This time around, the thought revolves around 'Thodi Si Aashiqui Hai, Thodi Si Bandagi Hai' and frankly, the song become so boring after 1 minute of listening itself that you are left with no other choice but to bring the album to a stop. With newcomer Swati joining Shaan and Vinay chipping in a bit as well, Maana Yeh... is yet another addition to the 6 minutes plus songs in the album.
Thodi Life Thoda Magic is an album that can be given a comfortable skip. The only number that works to some extent is Sonu Nigam's Thoda Sa Gum Ho Thodi Khushi Ho which manages to attract listener's attention but apart from that nothing really works in this Vinay Tiwari soundtrack. Forgettable!
