Once in a lifetime experience: Slumdog Millionaire
Slumdog Millionaire is the latest masterpiece from Danny Boyle, known for his movies such as Trainspotting. Slumdog is a simple tale of survival, love and longing set in ‘aamchi’ Mumbai. The movie romances Mumbai without enhancing its beauty or degrading its character, it makes you love the city, just the way it is.
Slumdog Millionaire tells us the story of Jamal Malik, who at 18 has captured India's imagination by occupying the hot seat of the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire with unbelievable accuracy. He seems to know every answer in the book, a fact that leads gleefully smarmy show host Prem to call the cops on him on charges of cheating. Arrested by police under suspicion of cheating, Jamal is interrogated by the authorities. The police simply can't believe that Jamal could possibly possess the knowledge to get this far in the game and in order to convince them of how he gained such knowledge; Jamal begins reflecting back on his childhood. As young boys, Jamal and his older brother, Salim, lived in the Mumbai slums, and lost their mother in a mob attack on Muslims. The events forced them to rely on their own wits to survive. The desperate siblings fell back on petty crime, eventually befriending adorable yet feisty young Latika as they sought out food and shelter on the unforgiving streets of Mumbai. Though life on the streets was never easy, Jamal's experiences ultimately instilled in him the knowledge he needed to answer the tough questions posed to him on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Thus the movie is told in the questions asked and the answers given by Jamal. It traces his life from a disturbing childhood till the time he hits the jackpot.
Slumdog Millionaire is based loosely on Vikas Swarup’s novel Q&A and director Danny Boyle treats it like a Bollywood film. His immaculate encapsulation of Mumbai without diluting its essence is what makes the movie an absolutely brilliant film. The screen writing, Simon Beaufoy is so smart, so energetic that everything is spoon-fed to the viewer. Together they create one of the most engaging rags-to-riches story of a boy raised in the slums of Mumbai. The technical aspects are enthralling. We have never seen Mumbai's slums so deeply. The cinematographer doesn't fail to capture even the minutest props with the best-innovative placements of camera angles and captures the streets of the metropolis remarkably. If Boyle's direction and Beaufoy's screenplay works, so does A.R. Rahman's exuberant musical score. The background score is eclectic, while the song 'Jai Ho' is mesmeric. The casting is top notch and Danny Boyle and his team has to be lauded for giving cinema Slumdog Millionaire.
Dev Patel who plays the central character of Jamal is a fine actor while Anil Kapoor as the host is highly competent. The younger actors who play Jamal and his brother Salim are simply awesome. They take you on their journey with such glee not knowing what's in store at the bend. Freida Pinto as Latika is a class act. She lets her eyes do most of the talking. Irrfan Khan as the cop gives his individualistic style to his role.
Slumdog Millionaire is a beautifully portrayed romance bounded with lots of hurdles in the union till last moment is sure to melt down your hearts. One of the finest movies of our times it is a must watch.
