Hastey-Hastey Review {2.0/5} & Review Rating

Anu Malik is back in news in this part of the season. Just recently his soundtrack of Anamika released while he has contributed to the score of Woodstock Villa as well. Now, his songs from Hastey Hastey are being heard, which is a film that stars Jimmy Sheirgill in the lead with Nisha Rawal making her big screen debut. Even though the film has been set in USA and has been made at a good budget, one keeps the fingers crossed to see what do Anu Malik and Sameer have to offer this time around.

The cry of 'follow your heart' precedes the voice of newcomer Shivaram Kumar who croons the title song 'Hastey Hastey'. Sunidhi Chauhan is Shivaram's partner in this lively number which celebrates love and life. Shivaram's voice is different, though a little inconsistent (at places sounding like Anu Malik himself) while Sunidhi brings on the spark whenever she is heard. The song is fine to begin with and is vintage Anu Malik in its 'antara' portions, especially the point when the guitar plays. The album concludes with the shorter 'sad version' of 'Hastey Hastey' which has the same set of singers and is an almost unplugged version with hardly an instrument in the background.

It is Panchamda revisited from the very beginning of 'Bheegi Bheegi Teri Zulafe' which is a Kunal Ganjawala solo. Whether it is the flute accompanying Kunal's voice or the overall arrangements that stay on to be serene, this melodious track is quite easy on ears and brings on the 70s charm. In fact, a single listening of the song makes one congratulate Jimmy and Nisha for getting a track which could easily have been a Rishi Kapoor - Neetu Singh favorite!

When lyrics like 'We will rock you - We will shock you' open a club track, one wonders if this is going to be yet another 'wannabe cool' number. An extended English passage arrives next in 'Rock The World' which is a dance floor number rendered by Shaan and Sunidhi Chauhan. The number has a strong 80s hangover both from the tune and orchestra perspective and there isn't much enticing about it even as it gets into a core Anu Malik territory in it's subsequent portions. The song later comes twice as a solo by Shaan and Sunidhi Chauhan each but not to much avail!

Well, if 'Rock The World' was average then let's say 'picture abhi baaki hai mere dost'! That's because 'New Age Mantra' which follows is so pedestrian that one just wishes to pronto move on the next track. Kunal Ganjawala and Sunidhi Chauhan come together in this youth centric club track where Anu Malik completely looses the plot. In fact, two minutes into the song and one starts wondering whether composers of yesteryears themselves never ever realize that they are going wrong and are hardly able to catch up with today's times! Worse, 'New Age Mantra' too makes a twin repeat appearance with a Sunidhi and Kunal solo.

The best track of the album comes in the form of 'Almadad Chere Khuda Mera Yaar' which is a Zubin Garg solo. With a 'sufi' base to it, the song is in the same mode as numerous other imports from Pakistan and isn't a bad hear at all. In fact the 'alaap' which happens in the background comes pretty close to that of 'Woh Lamhe' that was heard in Zeher and keeps the overall racy feel of the track intact. A song about being passionately in love with the one you love and not able to live a moment in his/her absence, 'Almadad' could well be pitched as the flagship song of the album.

It's time for some seduction with the arrival of 'Hum Hein Tum Ho', which should be picturised on the second lead heroine of the film Monishka. Set in night with the girl going all out to seduce the man of her dreams, the number is yet another average composition which only has its arrangements pepping up the scenario. Rest should be left for Monishka to ignite the scene since this Sunidhi Chauhan sung number doesn't quite come out of the time wrap.

Well, just like Anamika, even Hastey Hastey isn't quite a comeback project for Anu Malik. Thankfully he doesn't make an outrageously bad tune per se but except for 2-3 tracks, the album doesn't quite succeed. With 'Almadad' carrying maximum punch and 'Bheegi Bheegi' working quite well for its melodious feel, Hastey Hastey in the end turns out to be barely 'theek-thaak' album.
