it's a faltu movie, not worth watching. It's a waste of time. Mary Kom, and Sultan can never be compared with this. The story is very much predictable there's nothing that we could watch and enjoy.

Great editing and filmmaking technique aside, Dangal features wrestling matches that are authentic and real. Watching young actresses Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra grapple with their opponents is like watching the Commonwealth Games live. Their hard work and dedication is phenomenal. Fatima plays the elder daughter Geeta to great effect. She’s definitely a find for the future. Young Zaira Wasim who plays the young Geeta is even better. When she’s on screen, she even steals thunder from her superstar colleague.

In the story department, Dangal offers few surprises because Geeta and Babita's historic wins at the Commonwealth Games and following championships are common knowledge. However, this screen adaptation serves as a recap of their arduous journey and it vigorously recaptures their stubborn father's resolve to make them professional wrestlers against the odds. Since it encapsulates the historic wins of the Phogats, who brought India glory, the film is also bound to inspire more women to seriously consider kushti as a sport.

“Aamir Khan’s Dangal has the best written first half of 2016. The film opens with a bang and has some amazing moments right till the interval. Aamir plays Mahavir Singh Phogat whose dream is to have a son who will win him a medal at the Olympics. Fate has some other plans for him and instead of a son he has four daughters. Sakshi Tanwar plays his wife who refuses to understand his obsession with wrestling. The pace is quick and we are introduced to Geeta and Babita as two kids who happen to beat up a village boy who was calling them names. From there begins the journey of Dangal. The journey of discovery where Aamir sees the potential in Geeta and Babita and trains them to become wrestlers. The comparisons to Salman Khan’s Sultan might creep into your head before you enter the theatre but once the ball sets rolling there is no justification to the comparison. Dangal is very different from Sultan with the only common element being the backdrop of wrestling. Aamir is as usual in top form but it is the child actors playing Geeta and Babita who win your heart with their performance. There are tons of seeti and taali maar scenes in the first half and the writing is incredible. Geeta’s first fight and Aamir’s dialogue with Sakshi are some stand out scenes.

Director and co-screenwriter Nitesh Tiwari does not shy away from resorting to touches of sentimentality, but he keeps a tight rein on the flow of emotions as a tenacious father and his daughters navigate a treacherous social terrain steeped in deep-rooted patriarchy, gender prejudice and rural orthodoxy. What the audience sees in the film is that the visible weight around the male protagonist's paunchy waist is nothing compared to the massive burden of ambition and obsession that he carries in an ultra-conservative rural society. But what Dangal does best is in not falling for the temptation to give Mahavir Phogat a halo. He isn't by any means perfect. Driven by a personal agenda, he is guilty of robbing his daughters of their childhood and pushing them into the wrestling pit before they are old enough to decide for themselves.

It is the early 1980s and wrestlers here are treated as heroes, common folks believe they are physically superior to them. On top of that, Mahavir Singh Phogat is a former national champion. Now a government servant, Phogat, who wears a gold ring and a silver-plated watch, has a volatile temper and wants a son to carry his legacy forward. Such sentiments have already taken Haryana to the wrong side of the gender equality debate by the beginning of the ’90s. His apologetic wife (Sakshi Tanwar) shows how you start liking your oppressor because there is nowhere else to go. Not so directly, though. Tanwar’s comic timing tries to deflect the focus from her life to the little girls who are forced to fight the local chauvinists because their father has decided to transform them into world-class wrestlers.

Dangal is an emotionally made biographical tale that talks about a former National level wrestler who could not win a Gold medal for India due to his personal commitments but fulfills his wish by making his two daughters win medals at the Commonwealth Games. It is not the first time we are witnessing a film that speaks about a wrestler’s life, but no matter how many films you might have watched, Dangal stands unique in a lot of ways. Director Nitesh Tiwari has to be credited for the way he has treated the film with not much force fitted theatrics yet grabbing the attention of the audience throughout the film. Yes, there were one or two dramatic moments which looked essential for the script and they were not overdone. The performances are riveting and the visuals are stunning. The wrestling sequences are brutally realistic and were shot so well. Aamir Khan proves yet again why he is called Mr. Perfectionist. He only plays a guiding role here and lets the girls who play his daughters in the film take the center stage on most occasions. Not sure how many stars of his caliber would attempt to do a role like this. And the amount of effort that he has put in this film to gain weight and look old and then to lose weight to look like a real wrestler and that too for a flashback portion that hardly travels for 10 minutes, he deserves a bag full of appreciation. But let’s not forget the show stealers, Fatima Sana Shaikh (Geeta) and Sanya Malhotra (Babita), the girls who played Aamir Khan’s daughters. They showed great intensity and grit when it came to the wrestling sequence and also performed equally well when they had to enact an emotional scene. Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar, who played the younger version of Geeta and Babita made their screen time count as well. Nitesh has extracted some great acting from all the supporting artist too. Not a single frame looked amateurish. Dangal is adequately supported by three technicians, Pritam (Music), Sethu Sriram (Camera) and Ballu Saluja (Cuts). All three did their job picture perfect. A heartwarming music, a camera that had captured wrestling like never before and an editor who stood as an unsung hero. Finally, we have a film that talks about the real struggle of a wrestler. How much they had to lose to win a medal for the nation? People who watch this film might never take wrestling as their profession, but one thing is for certain, the respect for the sport will undoubtedly increase.
