Sun Pictures won’t change the title of Rajinikanth starrer Jailer in Kerala amid legal issues with Malayalam movie with the same name
Superstar Rajinikanth is all set to return to the silver screen with his action entertainer Jailer. Helmed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the film is arriving in cinemas in August 2023. The first song ‘Kaavaalaa’ featuring Rajinikanth and Tamannaah Bhatia has already become a fan favourite. However, the film has run into legal trouble over its title as a Malayalam film is also going to be released around the same with the same name.
The makers of the Malayalam film requested the Tamil filmmakers to change its name in Kerala to avoid confusion. The Malayalam film is a period thriller starring Dhyan Sreenivasan essaying the role of a freedom fighter who gets imprisoned by the Britishers. The movie is set in the 1940s. The film is helmed by Sakkir Madathil and produced by N K Mohammad.
In a recent press conference held by Sakkir Madathil, he said that he had requested the production house Sun Pictures to modify or change the title of the film Kerala. He fears that his film will suffer due to the name issue and the star power of Rajinikanth.
In response to the press conference, sun Pictures issued a legal statement in which they said that it is a corporate decision to not change the title of the film. They also said that the rights for the title have been obtained from the Tamil Film Producers Council and that they don’t mean to intend anyone’s sentiments. They said that they hope both films do well at the box office and there is enough space for two films to release at the same time.
Starring Mohanlal, Jackie Shroff, Shiva Rajkumar, Ramya Krishnan, Sunil, Vinayakan, Mirnaa Menon, and Tamannaah Bhatia in pivotal roles, Jailer will release in theatres on August 10.
