Top Gun and Batman Forever actor Val Kilmer dies at 65

Val Kilmer, the acclaimed actor best known for his roles in Top Gun and Batman Forever, has died at the age of 65 after a long battle with cancer. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed to The New York Times that he passed away in Los Angeles due to complications from pneumonia.

In 2014, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer, a battle he bravely fought while continuing to work in Hollywood. Val, a documentary about his life that premiered at Cannes in July 2021, showed him needing a breathing tube. In the report, his daughter shared that Val was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 and later recovered.

 

His voice was significantly affected by treatment, but he remained active in the industry, using AI-assisted technology to reprise his role in Top Gun: Maverick.

 

Val Kilmer’s marriage to actor Joanne Whalley, whom he met while filming Ron Howard’s 1988 fantasy movie Willow, ended in divorce. He is survived by their children, Mercedes and Jack. For many years, he resided on a ranch near Santa Fe.

 

Kilmer rose to fame playing the cocky but skilled naval aviator Tom Iceman Kazansky in the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun, starring alongside Tom Cruise. His portrayal of the cool and competitive fighter pilot made him a fan favourite, and he later reprised the role in Top Gun: Maverick (2022).

 

In 1995, Kilmer took on the iconic role of Bruce Wayne in Batman Forever, replacing Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader. Though the film received mixed reviews, Kilmer’s performance was widely praised, solidifying his place in Hollywood’s history of Batman actors.

 

Over the years, Kilmer delivered memorable performances in films such as The Doors (1991), where he portrayed rock legend Jim Morrison, Tombstone (1993), Heat (1995), and The Saint (1997).

 

His passing marks the loss of a beloved Hollywood star known for his intensity, charm, and versatility. Kilmer is survived by his children, Mercedes and Jack Kilmer.
