SS Rajamouli and James Cameron discuss Avatar: Fire and Ash and the power of epic storytelling
Celebrated filmmakers James Cameron and SS Rajamouli recently came together for a conversation centred around the Avatar franchise and its upcoming instalment, Avatar: Fire and Ash. The interaction marked a notable moment for global cinema, bringing together two directors known for redefining large-scale storytelling and visual spectacle.
During the discussion, the two filmmakers spoke about the challenges and responsibilities that come with mounting films of such scale. They reflected on their individual creative processes, the pressure that accompanies high audience expectations, and the shared sense of nervousness ahead of a major release. The conversation offered insight into how both directors approached world-building while staying emotionally connected to their stories.
Sharing his experience of watching Avatar: Fire and Ash, SS Rajamouli said he felt “like a child in the theatre.” He praised James Cameron’s ability to continually push the boundaries of cinematic technology while ensuring that emotion remained central to the narrative. Rajamouli also recalled how the Avatar films enjoyed an extraordinary run in India, noting that the franchise played in IMAX theatres in Hyderabad for nearly a year, underlining its lasting impact on big-screen audiences.
James Cameron, in turn, expressed his admiration for SS Rajamouli’s filmmaking style and storytelling vision. He also shared his interest in visiting Rajamouli’s film set, acknowledging the Indian director’s contribution to large-scale, immersive cinema.
Avatar: Fire and Ash, from 20th Century Studios, is set to release in India on December 19 in six languages—English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada—further highlighting the franchise’s global appeal and strong connection with Indian audiences.
