Queen of Tears starring Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Ji Won shatters ratings record held by Crash Landing on You; becomes network’s highest-rated drama

The success of Queen of Tears can be attributed to a multitude of factors. Firstly, the casting was a masterstroke. The drama marked the much-awaited comeback of Kim Soo Hyun, a name synonymous with K-drama royalty, after three years. Opposite him is the Kim Ji Won, who portrays heiress Hong Hae In, a character described as haughty yet soft-hearted. Penned by Park Ji Eun, at the heart of the drama lies Baek Hyun Woo (played by Kim Soo Hyun), a self-made man who rose from humble beginnings to become the respected legal director of Queens Group. On the other hand, we have Hong Hae-in (played by Kim Ji Won), the heiress to the Queens Group empire and known within the company as the "Arrogant Queen." Despite their contrasting backgrounds, their paths collide, and love blossoms. As the series unfolds, the couple faces a life-altering crisis that threatens to shatter their seemingly perfect world. The logline perfectly encapsulates this sentiment: "A miraculous love story of a married couple overcoming a dizzying crisis."

Beyond the central couple, the series boasts a stellar supporting cast. Park Sung Hoon portrays Yoon Eun Seong, who plays a pivotal role in the unraveling events. Kwak Dong Yeon steps into the shoes of Hong Soo Cheol, a character with a complex connection to Hae In.

The pairing of these two powerhouse actors was a major draw for fans, many of whom had been eagerly anticipating their on-screen collaboration since the drama's announcement. The anticipation only grew with each passing day, creating a significant buzz around the series. But Queen of Tears offered more than just star power. The plot, a classic broken marriage turned into rekindled romance, is a proven crowd-pleaser. The prospect of witnessing Baek Hyun Woo, the unassuming everyman, win over the cold and aloof Hong Hae In was undeniably captivating.

The series also benefitted from its release date. Premiering on March 16 on both tvN and Netflix, it landed at a perfect time for K-drama enthusiasts. March 2024 seemed even brighter with the arrival of Queen of Tears, offering viewers a compelling narrative and the chance to witness the magic of Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Ji Won together for the first time.

Meanwhile, Crash Landing on You starring Son Ye Jin and Hyun Bin aired between 2019-2020 and soon became one of the most beloved pairs in South Korea. They went onto marry each other in real life and have a child together. Crash Landing on You tells the tale of star-crossed lovers Yoon Se Ri (Son Ye-jin), a South Korean heiress known for her luxurious lifestyle, and Ri Jeong-hyok (Hyun Bin), a stoic North Korean military officer. A paragliding accident deposits Yoon Se Ri in the heart of North Korea, where she encounters Ri Jeong Hyok.  Despite their vastly different backgrounds and the political divide between their nations, an unexpected romance blossoms.

Crash Landing on You quickly became a global phenomenon, praised for its heartwarming story, charming characters, and its ability to bridge cultural divides. The drama's success stemmed from its unique blend of humour, romance, and political intrigue. The show's exploration of a forbidden love story, set against the backdrop of North Korea's unique social landscape, resonated with audiences.
