Park Hyung Sik starrer Our Blooming Youth, Lee Je Hoon's Taxi Driver 2, Lee Sung Kyung's Call It Love – 7 new K-dramas to watch in February 2023

2023 might have started with only a handful of K-dramas in January, but that won’t be the case this month. February brings with it the promise of new stories for the audiences’ entertainment. The month will see the return of K-dramas like the Cha Eun Woo starrer Island and the Son Seok Goo starrer Big Bet, in addition to a fresh new sageuk Our Blooming Youth starring Park Hyung Sik among others. Let’s take a look at the K-dramas releasing in February 2023.

1. OUR BLOOMING YOUTH 

 

Park Hyung Sik is synonymous when it comes to delivering stellar performances in a romantic comedy. The actor has also shown his prowess in the historical drama Hwarang. He is once again set to don the hanbok and present a new character named Crown Prince Lee Hwan on screen in the historical drama Our Blooming Youth. He will star opposite Jeon Seo Hee who will play the role of Min Jae Yi, a woman accused of killing a noble family. The Crown Prince is aloof, and arrogant and is also said to carry a curse. Crown Prince Lee Hwan and Min Jae Yi’s paths cross and thus begins a tale of politics, intrigue and of course, a forbidden romance. Our Blooming Youth is brought to the audience by Jung Hyun Jung who has previously written wonderful stories like Because It’s the First Time, Romance is a Bonus Book, and Lovestruck in the City, among others. The story is an adaptation of the hit Chinese drama The Golden Hairpin but it will be interesting to see this sageuk spin. Our Blooming Youth will premiere on February 6 on TvN. It is directed by Lee Jong Jae who has helmed projects like 100 Days My Prince.

 


 

2. LOVE TO HATE YOU

 

You’ve seen Yoo Teo in supporting roles in dramas like The School Nurse Files and Arthdal Chronicles. But now you will see him in a leading role in Netflix’s upcoming romantic comedy series Love To Hate You. Yoo Teo plays the role of Nam Gong Ho, a popular actor who is known for his charming roles in romantic comedies. But in reality, he does not trust women. He is paired with Kim Ok Bin who plays Yeo Mi Ran, a junior lawyer at a law firm focusing on entertainment laws. She has no interest in romance and gets highly competitive around men. What happens when two such contrasting personalities clash? We shall find out in the drama Love To Hate You when it premieres on Netflix on February 9. Kim Ji Hoon, whom we also know as Denver from Money Heist Korea: Joint Economic Area will also be seen sharing the screen space. The drama is written by Choi Soo Young who also wrote for My ID is Gangnam Beauty and it is directed by Kim Jung Kwon whose last directorial venture was the movie Ditto. 

 


 

3. THE HEAVENLY IDOL

 

It won’t be wrong to say that as an audience we all fell in love with Kim Min Gyu after watching Business Proposal. The actor did not appear on screen for a while, but now the wait is coming to an end! Kim Min Gyu is returning to the small screen in the fantasy romance drama The Heavenly Idol as Pontifex Rembrary, a priest with divine powers who wakes up in the body of Woo Yeon Woo, a member of a lesser-known idol group named Wild Animal. The group is almost on the verge of disbanding but Woo Yeon Woo aka Pontifex Rembrary’s antics on the stage make the group viral. Go Bo Gyeol as Kim Dal will also be sharing the space with Kim Min Gyu. The Heavenly Idol will premiere on February 15 on TvN. The drama is adapted from a webtoon named Holy Idol by Shin Hwa Jin.

 


 

4. BIG BET – SEASON 2

 

Oh Seung Hoon was hot on Cha Moo Shik’s heels after Cha became a suspect in CEO Min Seok Joon’s murder. Having fled from his home country, Cha Mu Sik had set up a flourishing Casino business in the Philippines. But tensions rise as no one can be trusted, it is a gamble of money and power after all! That was the story of Big Bet Season 1. As the cat and mouse chase intensifies in season 2, it remains to be seen what becomes of Cha Mu Shik and Oh Seung Hoon. Choi Min Shik, Son Seok Goo and Lee Dong Hwi will reprise their roles as Cha Mu Shik, Oh Seung Hoon and Jung Pal respectively. Big Bet Season 2 will be released on Disney+Hotstar on February 15.

 


 

5.TAXI DRIVER – SEASON 2

 

The team at Rainbow Taxi is finally making a comeback! After a year-long wait, the group of crime-fighting vigilantes are here once again and this time they are in Vietnam. Season 2 of Taxi Driver marks the return of Lee Je Hoon as Kim Do Gi, Kim Eui Sung as Jang Han Chul, Pyo Ye Jin as Ahn Go Eun, and Jang Hyuk Jin as Choi Kyung Goo, among others. Season 1 saw detective Kim Do Gi’s story as the star worker at Rainbow Taxi as he pursues justice in its true sense. Taxi Driver is adapted from a webtoon named The Deluxe Taxi by Carlos and KeuKeu Jae Jin. Oh Sang Ho and Lee Dan return as the show’s writer and director respectively. Taxi Driver Season 2 will premiere on February 17 on SBS.

 


 

6. CALL IT LOVE

 

You had a romantic comedy, you had an intriguing story, you also had a gripping thriller and now there is time for a mellow romance! February is fabled as the month of love and it also marks the final moments of autumn as the leaves finally fade and make a path for the fresh bloom of spring. Call It Love stars Lee Sung Kyung and Kim Young Kwang in the lead roles. This melodrama romance tells the stories of two individuals who are frustrated with their harsh realities. Lee Sung Kyung plays the role of Shim Woo Joo, whose father is dating a woman who hates her (Woo Joo). She is kicked out of the house by the said lady after her father’s death. Frustrated, Woo Joo reaches out to the lady’s son Hang Dong Jin, played by Kim Young Kwang who is a workaholic. As the two get to know each other, unexpected romance blooms between the two.

 

Call It Love is set to premiere on Disney+Hotstar on February 22. It is directed by Lee Kwang Young who has helmed projects like The Secret Life of my secretary. The story is scripted by Kim Ga Eun and Kim Ji Yeon.

 


 

7. ISLAND – PART 2

 

Cha Eun Woo stole our hearts as Priest Yohan in the horror thriller K-drama Island. As the show returns for season 2, our beloved priest will also make a comeback. The story of Island follows Won Mi-Ho (played by Lee Da Hee), the arrogant, selfish and only daughter of the conglomerate Daehan Group. One of her mistakes angers her father and she is sent to Jeju island and made to work as an ethics teacher. But the island has horrors of its own. That’s when Priest Yohan enters the scene to aid Won Mi Ho. Kim Nam Gil will also reprise his role as Van. Season 2 of Island will tell us more about the antagonist Sung Joon and also the mythology of the Lust Demons. The show will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on February 24.

 

While 7 new K-dramas are dropping this month, one Korean movie is also releasing on Netflix. Actor Im Siwan stars in the upcoming sci-fi cybercrime movie after last year’s feel-good drama Summer Strike. Unlocked tells the story of an ordinary office worker who loses her phone and proceeds to be threatened. After losing her phone which contains all of her personal information, the absolute worst-case scenario becomes her reality.
