Jason Momoa reveals his ’80s Rock playlist that helped shape his Minecraft character; says, “I was around 10 years old, and it was fun to go back to that”

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures are set to bring Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time, to the big screen with its first-ever live-action adaptation - A Minecraft Movie. Directed by Jared Hess, the film stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. The movie will release in India in 3D and IMAX 3D in English and Hindi on April 4, 2025.

The story follows four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (played by Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks)—who, while navigating their everyday struggles, are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld, a cubic universe where creativity is the key to survival. To return home, they must master this strange world, battle dangerous creatures like Piglins and Zombies, and embark on a magical quest alongside an expert crafter, Steve (played by Jack Black). Their adventure will test their courage and creativity, reinforcing the skills they need in the real world.

Jason Momoa, who plays Garrett, immersed himself in the role by listening to music that resonated with his character’s personality. “The first song I would listen to when we were making this movie was Skid Row's ‘I Remember You,’ and something by Billy Idol,” he shared. “There was lots of stuff from the second half of the ‘80s, when Garrett (my character) was a young rock star gamer. Those years were huge for me too—Guns N’ Roses. I was around 10 years old, and it was fun to go back to that.”

 

Momoa recalled how he was first approached for the film by producer Cale Boyter, with whom he previously worked on Dune. “Cale was like, ‘I have this crazy idea. It's a comedy and, dude, you'd be perfect for this role. Will you do it?’ And I said yeah, because I trust Cale. It's my first movie I've done like this, a live-action movie where it's going into a world like this, but it just happens to be the biggest one in history. It's amazing.”

Momoa was also excited about director Jared Hess helming the project, citing his admiration for Hess’s past work. “Jared has a weird, amazing sense of comedy, Napoleon Dynamite is absolutely brilliant and so is Nacho Libre. If I can always keep working for Jared, I will. I love his movies. He's pretty amazing at that world-building. He was the perfect choice for this movie.”

 

His enthusiasm extended to sharing screen space with Jack Black. “I love Jack Black so much, I love everything he does. I was like, Cale, you have to get Jack Black. He had to be in it.”

 

A Minecraft Movie is presented by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures in collaboration with Vertigo Entertainment, On The Roam, and Mojang Studios. It promises to be an exciting cinematic experience that brings the world of Minecraft to life like never before.
