By Nandini Iyengar -

The month of October was a joyous one for the fans of BTS aka the Armys. The group’s oldest member Jin returned from his mandatory military service. But his return was not without surprises and gifts. Upon his return, he quickly engaged himself in crafting new music for his fans. His solo debut EP Happy was announced shortly after he was discharged from the military. A pre-release single titled ‘I’ll Be There’ was released to create anticipation amongst the fans. Happy was released on November 15, 2024, with six tracks led by the track ‘Running Wild.’

“I’ll be there” says BTS’ Jin in his solo debut EP ‘Happy’ - Album Review

1. RUNNING WILD

Happy opens with the title track ‘Running Wild,’ an upbeat number that talks about breaking free of shackles and obstacles. BTS Jin sings the track entirely in English, showcasing a multilingual singing prowess - We'll be running wild/Lovin' 'til the sun is out/Running 'til there's nothin' left/'Til our last breath. The music video features a dog who is Jin’s constant companion. It is quite emotional to see Jin with a pet because he lost his pet a few years ago. Meteors are falling from the sky as Jin and his pet navigate a post-apocalyptic world but still find joy in a few fleeting moments.

2. I’LL BE THERE

Prior to the album release, Jin gave us a glimpse of his solo debut album with ‘I’ll Be There.’ The track is a joyous amalgamation of Jin’s promise to his fans and a message of hope - I will be there forever/I’ll stay the same, I’ll be there for you. In the music video, we find Jin busking in an open space and inviting listeners with his encouraging words and upbeat rock-and-roll beats.

3. ANOTHER LEVEL

The mood switches to a tad bit serious with ‘Another Level.’ Jin speaks about the moments when things get very difficult and unbreakable but still, there is a glimmer of hope to keep going ahead - Don't be scared/Even if I break down sometimes/One more step. There is a cinematic appeal to the track, especially as it comes to a stunning conclusion.

4. FALLING

A true blue confessional track with superb influence of indie rock music graces the listener with ‘Falling.’ The track leaves no space for doubt as Jin croons - I want to talk to you/Do you really not know?/You got me falling. There is no sense of urgency or emergency but the proclamation still stands strong.

5. HEART ON THE WINDOW (FT WENDY)

It is a delight to see Jin collaborate with Red Velvet’s WENDY for this track. The song is a soft rock number and both their voices complement each other beautifully. The song feels straight out of a romantic comedy where the characters are confessing long-hidden feelings - When I left you a heart on the window/I engraved it more deeply

6. I WILL COME TO YOU

Jin’s solo debut EP Happy comes to a somber conclusion with ‘I Will Come To You.’ It won’t be wrong to say that this song is a letter to his listeners that holds a promise of forever. It encapsulates some very powerful promises in the cushiony melody of a piano-led ballad - Even if I’m away for a moment because of longing/I promise I will come to you/If you need me, I will come to you.

Jin’s solo debut album, Happy, beautifully carries forward the ideals he has consistently showcased in his music. Before his military enlistment, Jin’s singles often focused on being a source of comfort and support for his listeners. This EP reflects the same spirit, embodying his unwavering dedication to healing the world, one heartfelt track at a time.

In Happy, Jin leans into rock, pop, and ballads—genres that highlight his vocal strengths. The simplicity of his lyrics, paired with his genuine emotions, creates an intimate connection with his audience. By actively participating in the writing process, Jin reinforces his commitment to creating music that resonates deeply with his fans. He’s always emphasized that his goal is to bring comfort and joy through his artistry, and this album is no exception.

Whether you’re feeling happy, sad, introspective, or simply in the mood for some good music, Happy is a versatile and heartfelt EP that speaks to a range of emotions. It’s a testament to Jin’s artistry and his dedication to making music that truly touches the soul.
