Trade experts are SUPREMELY confident about Ajay Devgn’s Bholaa: “It will start with a BANG. The multiplexes will take to it while the mass circuits will go on another LEVEL”

Less than two weeks are left for the release of Bholaa, Ajay Devgn’s big-budget action extravaganza. Also starring Tabu, Amala Paul, Deepak Dobriyal and Sanjay Mishra, it releases on March 30 and all eyes are on this film as the trade and industry are hopeful that it can work at the box office. After the blockbuster success of Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Pathaan, the industry has been waiting for a big hit. A lot was expected from the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and though it has done well, the expectations were that it would do far better.

Hence, the industry is placing its bets on Bholaa. A source told Bollywood Hungama, “The insiders who have seen the movie believe that it has Ajay Devgn’s best direction till date. The pace and action of the movie are going to surprise the big screen viewer.”

 

We spoke to the trade experts and everyone is unanimous about their excitement for the film. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “There is indeed sufficient buzz and it’s the next big thing in the first quarter of 2023. All eyes are on Bholaa right now. It’ll hopefully cater to urban centres as well as the mass circuits. The trailer is really good and I love the posters of the film. It reminds me of the hand-painted posters that we used to have back in the 70s.”

 

He added, “Also, with Bholaa, Ajay returns to the action genre after a long time. Runway 34 (2022) and Drishyam 2 (2022) weren’t action-oriented. He started with Phool Aur Kaante, which was also an action entertainer. Moreover, he’s directing Bholaa. Coming after Drishyam 2, the expectations are obviously also tremendous because Ajay and Tabu both star in the film. I genuinely feel that Ajay must have made changes and not taken the original Tamil version as it is.” Bholaa is a remake of the Tamil hit Kaithi (2019).

 

Trade analyst Atul Mohan stated, “There’s excitement to watch the film as it stars Ajay Devgn, who’s a mass hero. And this one looks like an out-and-out massy film.”

 

Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, opined, “The film has a sufficient buzz. There is no competition. Most of the holdover releases would have exhausted their run by the time it releases on March 30. Secondly, it’s an Ajay Devgn action film. His films are always looked up to at the box office. Though it’s a remake, the expectations are quite good. The promotional materials shared by the makers and the way he’s going all out to promote have been noticed and appreciated. Hence, there’s a buzz for the film.”

 

The 3D and IMAX factor

 

Bholaa will release not just in the regular 2D format but also in 3D and IMAX. On this, Atul Mohan explained, “The kind of action which we see in Bholaa can make for a great watch in IMAX. A film should be released in 3D only if it justifies and alleviates your storytelling. Ajay Devgn has been a student of cinema for many years. He knows how to present a product in the most appealing way to the viewers. He must have sensed that Bholaa will be ideal in 3D and IMAX and hence, he opted for it.”

 

 

Girish Johar remarked, “It (3D and IMAX) depends on the film and the sequences in the film. If it adds to the cinema going experience, I am sure the audiences will lap it up. I don’t think that in today’s times, anyone will entail huge costs to make it friendlier to the 3D format just for the heck of it. I believe that the action in the film is designed in such a way that it’ll make viewers sit up and take notice. In 3D and IMAX, the impact will be manifold.”

 

Next Rs. 100 crores grosser?

 

Will Bholaa be the third Rs. 100 crores grosser after Pathaan and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar? Taran Adarsh nodded, “Yes. I am very confident. This one will start with a bang. The multiplexes will take to it while the mass circuits will go on another level. The contribution from mass circuits cannot be undermined. These are major revenue boosters. Our filmmakers often tend to ignore these centres. There’s too much focus on making metro-centric films, which is not right. Also, I have said that the 90s actors can surprise you big time. Not to forget, Bholaa is Ajay Devgn’s own production and he’s also acting and directing in it. I am sure he’ll ensure that he delivers a quality product.”

 

In agreement, Atul Mohan said, “Yes (it can cross the Rs. 100 crores mark). The opening will be very strong, looking at the way the hype and craze are building up. It should easily be one of the biggest openers of 2023, next to Pathaan. It will have open weeks and will benefit from the Ram Navami holiday. Also, it’ll enjoy a four-day weekend.”

 

Girish Johar also said that “Bholaa has all the potential and the capability” to be a Rs. 100 crores grosser.

 

Taran Adarsh signed off by saying, “The industry has a lot of hopes from Bholaa. The cinemas have been bleeding. Yes, Pathaan did wonders. But we can’t rely on this one film to wipe off the tears of the exhibitors. The industry needs to deliver many Pathaan’s and Bholaa’s.”
