Sona Mohapatra explores two musical worlds with ‘Re Bawri’ and ‘Vaari Vaari’

By Bollywood Hungama News Network -

From the popular tracks ‘Ambarsariya’ and ‘Bedardi Raja’ to the more intimate melodies of ‘Jiya Lage Na’ and ‘Abhi Nahin Aana’, Sona Mohapatra has explored different musical styles throughout her career. As her songs continue to reach new listeners, the singer remains associated with a musical approach that moves beyond a single genre or sound.

Sona Mohapatra explores two musical worlds with ‘Re Bawri’ and ‘Vaari Vaari’

One of the latest releases in this musical journey is ‘Vaari Vaari’, a reinterpretation of the song originally featured in Lust Stories. Featuring Sona Mohapatra and Ram Sampath, the new version adopts a more intimate arrangement, placing the vocals and live musicianship at the centre. The release also introduces Sona’s Book Room Sessions, a performance format that offers audiences a closer experience of her music.

In contrast, ‘Re Bawri’ presents a more energetic side of the singer. Featuring Alia Bhatt on screen, the dance-led track combines vibrant visuals with Sona’s distinctive vocals. Together, the two songs showcase different aspects of her musical identity, reflecting her ability to move between contrasting styles.

Reflecting on her artistic journey and the thought behind the reinterpretation, Sona Mohapatra said, “The music industry loves putting artists in neat little boxes. One hit, one sound, one image, and then you’re expected to keep repeating yourself. I’ve spent my career happily refusing that invitation. ‘Ambarsariya’, ‘Bedardi Raja’, ‘Re Bawri’ and ‘Vaari Vaari’ are different worlds, but unmistakably mine. What thrills me is seeing younger listeners discover songs like ‘Jiya Lage Na’ and ‘Abhi Nahin Aana’ as if they were written yesterday.

“‘Vaari Vaari’ is another little act of rebellion: taking a thumri born in an electronic soundscape and bringing it into the intimacy of my book room, with real musicians and nowhere for the voice to hide. I’ve always believed that our musical heritage is a launchpad, not a museum. I’m not interested in recreating the past or manufacturing nostalgia. I want to take everything we’ve inherited and make something audaciously new out of it. And I feel like I’m only getting started.” She added.

Experimentation has remained a recurring feature of Sona’s work across Bollywood, independent music and collaborations. Her creative partnership with composer and producer Ram Sampath has brought together different musical influences, melodies and arrangements while retaining a distinct identity.

Apart from her recorded music, Sona has also worked as a live producer and performer, creating experiential properties such as ‘SONA24K’, ‘Lal Pari Mastani’ and ‘Bhakti Blues’. Her individual style, engagement with Indian musical traditions and approach to performance have further shaped her work beyond film songs.

With ‘Re Bawri’ and ‘Vaari Vaari’, Sona Mohapatra continues to explore contrasting musical expressions. While one embraces an energetic, dance-led sound, the other focuses on intimacy and musicianship. The two releases reflect her interest in reinterpreting musical influences and reaching listeners across generations.
