For the unversed, on February 20, Sona initiated a conversation around mainstream pop culture. She shared a montage video featuring clips of popular Hindi and Punjabi tracks, where the female lead is specifically asking their partner to take them out to “shopping” for clothes and footwear. It included songs such as ‘Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan,’ ‘Lehenga’, and ‘Naah Goriye’, among others. At the end of the video, Sona shared the QR code of her latest song, titled ‘Roti Machine’.

Captioning the video, the 46-year-old singer tweeted, “Dear #India , mainstream #popculture is constantly telling us that women can be won over with bags, shoes & BS like such, are meant to be objectified or then just be playful, chulbuli, & pretty..the #jacquelinefernandez ‘s get brand endorsements for being such mascots?”

In a following tweet, Mohapatra addressed a response, in which, the Twitter user claimed that he is a “South Indian” and these songs are not “mainstream” for them. She replied to the user, and wrote, “Well, this might not be your mainstream, but the ‘south’ with its men flashing unearned swag in the potboiler movies, while pretty damsels mostly half their age whimpering is no better in such matters .. I’ve stayed in the south most my growing years btw.”

Meanwhile, a user lauded Sona for addressing the issue. Reacting to the same, she added, “Yes... & it’s just a one way conversation & a representation of either male chavaunism like this (where ladies are basically lazy ass gold diggers et all ) or voice in the music space. His heartbreak, his swag, his pyar.”
