SAG Awards 2022: Lee Jung Jae, Jung Ho Yeon get emotional winning Best Actor and Actress awards as Squid Game creates history with three wins

Netflix’s South Korean mega-hit Squid Game has made historic wins at the 28th Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards. The superhit survival thriller made history by becoming the first non-English language series ever to be nominated for and winning an award in the history of the SAG awards 2022.

The series, which snagged nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor, Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor and Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble, takes home the 3 prizes creating monumental win. The award ceremony was attended by actors Lee Jung Jae, Jung Ho Yeon, Park Hae Soo, Kim Joo Ryong, Anupam Tripathi and show creator Hwang Dong Hyuk.

 

Lee Jung Jae, who was up against Succession’s Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong and The Morning Show’s Billy Crudup, took home his first ever SAG Award, for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. The 49-year-old actor expressed his gratitude towards the global audience who loved Squid Game and his Squid Game teamin his heartfelt speech receiving the award.

 

 

 

Model-turned-actor Jung Ho Yeon faced off against star-studded ensemble including The Morning Show’s Jennifer Anniston and Reese Witherspoon, The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss and Succession’s Sarah Snook and snagged award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series. In tears and awe of the moment, the actress expressed her sincere gratitude to the Squid Game teamand the show’s global fans in the emotional speech.

 

 

 

The stunt ensemble nomination pitted Squid Game against Cobra Kai, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki and Mare of Easttown. It also marked only the second time a Korean actor has won an award for their performance after Youn Yuh Jung won the best female actor in a supporting role for her performance in director Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari last year.

 

 

 

In November 2021, the first season of Squid Game has officially became the Netflix’s most-watched show or film ever, with 1.6 billion hours viewed.
