Ram Gopal Varma calls Dhurandhar a “nightmare” for Pan-India biggies, says film is most discussed in 50 years

Veteran filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has described the Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar as a “nightmare” for other big film projects currently in production, arguing that its success has unsettled parts of the Indian film industry. In a post on social media platform X on December 25, Varma claimed that some industry figures are deliberately ignoring the film because they feel “threatened” by the standards it has set.

Varma called Dhurandhar — directed by Aditya Dhar — the “most discussed film in the last 50 years” and likened its impact to that of a “monstrous dog” that others would rather avoid acknowledging. He suggested that filmmakers who continue to rely on traditional templates such as heavy visual effects, expensive sets, item numbers, and hero-worship storytelling may struggle to match what Dhurandhar has achieved.

 

“Whenever a path-breaking and monstrous hit like #dhurandhar comes, the industry people will wish to ignore it because they will feel threatened by it due to their inability to match its standards,” Varma wrote, adding that Dhurandhar will keep lingering in the minds of creators working on so-called Pan-India projects.

 

 

 

The Dhurandhar cast includes Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Sara Arjun and others. Since its theatrical release on December 5, 2025, the espionage thriller has enjoyed a strong box-office run and is on the verge of entering the Rs 1000 crores club worldwide, making it one of the year’s highest-grossing Indian films.
