Lalit Modi confirms biopic is in the works; reveals Ranveer Singh’s interest in lead role: “He came to London to see me, two years ago”
Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has revealed that a biopic based on his life is currently in development. While the project is still in the scripting stage, Modi also shared that Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh had once expressed a strong interest in portraying him on screen.
Speaking to ANI, Modi confirmed that work on the biographical film is underway and that an extensive research and writing process is currently taking place. "There is (biopic is in works). It's all being scripted right now. I've already sat hundreds of interviews...I have a whole team under Sneha Rajani, who used to run Sony...But they're just scripting the story now," he said.
The former IPL chief was then asked who he would like to see play him in the film. In response, Modi revealed that Ranveer Singh had personally reached out to him and even travelled to London to discuss the possibility. "Ranveer wants to play me. He came and saw me. I would like him to play. But if he has the time, now he's become so big. I didn't know Ranveer. I knew Deepika very well. I never met Ranveer. One day, I get a call saying Ranveer wants to see you. And he comes to London to see me a few years ago, two years ago," Modi recalled.
According to Modi, the meeting left a lasting impression on him. He said the actor was genuinely interested in understanding his journey and believed the role would be a fascinating one to portray on screen. "He (Ranveer) said in his life, if there was one role he wanted to play, it would be Lalit Modi as commissioner. It wasn't me asking him. I think he's great. Without doubt, he's amazing. And what he has done with Dhurandhar is amazing," Modi said.
However, he admitted that he is unsure whether the actor remains interested in the project today, given the developments in Ranveer's career over the past few years. "Whether he still wants to play me or not, but two years ago, we sat here, right in this house, right here, and we talked about him playing. But we are now scripting it. It's a lot of work," he added.
The biopic is expected to chronicle Modi's rise as one of the key architects behind the Indian Premier League, a tournament that transformed cricket into a global entertainment product. While details regarding the director, production house and casting have not yet been announced, Modi's latest comments have already sparked speculation about whether Ranveer Singh could eventually headline the project.
On the professional front, Ranveer Singh has been generating buzz for his recently released the Dhurandhar duology.
