Gadar’s Tara Singh and Border’s Kuldip Singh Chandpuri share a strange connection

By Keyur Seta -

Anil Sharma’s Gadar 2 is one of the most keenly awaited films of the year. The major attraction for the film is the return of Sunny Deol’s character Tara Singh. For the unversed, Tara created havoc in Pakistan in the first film released in 2001 when he crossed the border with his little son Jeete (Utkarsh Sharma) to rescue his wife Sakeena, played by Ameesha Patel.

The trailer of Gadar 2 shows that in the second movie of the franchise, Tara Singh will again cross the border, but this time to rescue Jeete. The trailer shows that his son is somehow jailed in Pakistan where he is being showered with atrocities by Pakistani officials and the army. But Jeete is sure that his father will rescue him and take him back to India.

What is interesting about Gadar 2 is that the film is based in 1971, it shows a kind of a war between Indians and Pakistani army and Sunny plays a sardar, as he is carrying forward his character from the first movie.

Going back to 1997, in JP Dutta’s Border, Sunny played a senior Indian army official Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri who fights against Pakistan and ensures that he and his fellow Indians win the battle. Interestingly, the film was also set in 1971 and Sunny played a sardar in it.

Hence, Sunny Deol becomes the only actor who fights against Pakistan twice on screen in the same year (1971) while playing an angry sardar on both the occasions and emerges victorious too in both the films. Although Gadar 2 hasn’t released yet and hence we haven’t seen the climax, it is anybody’s guess that Tara Singh will win in a film that celebrates his character and his strength.

If not, it will be the audience’s turn to angrily ukhaadofy handpumps.

My weird mind also makes me think of a possibility of a scene in Gadar 2 where Tara Singh meets Kuldip Singh. This would surely make the moment go viral (whether for good or bad reasons is a different story). Alas, the makers didn’t take my creative inputs.

So, I would quietly get back to live my life as Mathuradas.
