EXCLUSIVE: Taran Adarsh criticizes film critics who make a joke out of a film; says, “Audiences give them a befitting reply”

Gadar 2 has created a wave of sorts at the box office, with the film continuing to receive immense love from audiences. The Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel starrer, despite set in a different time period and era, has managed to set a new trend of quintessential commercial cinema. Film reviewer and trade analyst Taran Adarsh opened up to Bollywood Hungama about how the first part of the film was written off initially just like the sequel but the two films managed to retain their strong hold at the box office and created history.

In an exclusive interview of Bollywood Hungama, Taran Adarsh talked about how films, directors, and actors are underestimated by film critics. He, not only recalled the way Gadar had been written off, but also revealed how there was a segment of people who did not appreciate Gadar 2 and there were even film critics who had even written off the film. “Gadar first part was trashed, and it was written off. Recently, when I was in Australia, people called me to say ‘Gadar 2 was an outdated film’, what has Anil Sharma made, he ruined Gadar 2 ko etc. It was all negative. Of course, it was only by a small segment of people, and they were so disconnected from the world.”

 

He continued, “Then they were some critics. Teek hai main maanta hoon aap ko picture pasand nahi. Achha hai. Aisa kai baar hota hai ki aapko, inko, kisi aur ko picture pasand nahi aati, lekin mujhe aati hai. (I agree that you didn’t like the film. That’s good and it happens quite frequently where one likes the film and the other doesn’t). That is okay because opinions can vary. But the thing is aap jab uski dajiya udaane lag jaate hain, mazaak banane lag jaate hain, (but when you start making memes out of it and destroy the content of the film) that's a wrong thing. If you don’t like it, no problem. Write negative about  the film, criticize it too because that's your job – to like or dislike a film. But don’t make buffoonery out of it. Don’t use personal attack because those are all wrong things. Don't hit below the belt.”

 

 

He further concluded by maintaining that at the end of the day the value of a critic’s opinion can only be this much because at the end of the day, it is the audience who seals the fate of a film. “And kya ehmiyat reh gayi aapki dedh - do star ki - (what importance will the one and half -two stars you give will have) for films like Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, Dream Girl 2, and others? Darshakon ne aapko kharara jawab diya hai (the audiences have responded well to it). Janta Janardhan is the final verdict. Kyunki jab woh bolte hain tab duniya sunti hai. Aapke, mere, unke bolne se koi farak nahi padta (When they speak the world will listen to them. You and me talking about it will make no difference),” concluded the reviewer.

 

Gadar 2, directed by Anil Sharma, also features Utkarsh Sharma and Simrat Kaur Randhawa in lead roles along with Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel. The film released on August 11.
