EXCLUSIVE: Taran Adarsh on big clashes like Singham Again and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, “Fan wars on social media spill over to the industry and distributors start fighting for screens”

This Friday, November 1, will see a major box office clash between Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again and Anees Bazmee’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Veteran film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh, in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, explained how these clashes become ugly because of the fan wars on social media.

He said, “This is not the first time that such a clash is taking place. It has happened before too. When two big films release together in today’s times, there’s a lot of negativity that starts flowing in for both the films before the release.”

 

Coming to the ugly fan wars, Taran said, “As soon as the clash is announced, the fan clubs start writing on social media that iska yeh hai aur iska yeh hai. The fan clubs of both the stars of the film start targeting each other’s films. It spills over to the industry. And when the film’s release date nears, the distributors start fighting with each other, not literally, to get the screens. So, who gets affected the most? The exhibitors because they have to please both (the films).”

 

He added that the clash could have been avoided, “In this case, there are two heavyweights that are coming together. The clash could be avoided.”

 

However, Taran was also quick to add that one can’t have a monopoly on release dates while citing an old example. “One particular actor immediately called me up when once I posted about one particular film releasing during Diwali (and thereby clashing with that actor’s film). He (the actor from that film) asked me whether this film is surely coming on Diwali. I said yes, it’s official. He said that since I have posted, it has to be official but why are they doing it? I only told him that we are living in a democracy, and nobody has sole rights on any release date.”

 

Singham Again has an ensemble cast of Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Arjun Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Tiger Shroff, Ranveer Singh and Akshay Kumar. On the other hand, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 stars Kartik Aaryan, Triptii Dimri, Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit Nene.
