Emraan Hashmi reveals Mahesh Bhatt warned him on the set of Footpath: “If you can't act…”

Emraan Hashmi, a prominent name in Bollywood today, had a challenging start to his acting career. Despite being born into a family of film stars, his grandmother Purnima Das Verma, a veteran actress known for her roles in classic films like Zanjeer, was initially hesitant about his decision to pursue acting. She feared the unpredictability of the film industry and doubted his suitability for the profession. In a candid interview with Shubhankar Mishra, Emraan shared, “She was scared. She didn’t think I could do acting.”

Mahesh Bhatt's belief and tough mentorship

 

Emraan's journey took a pivotal turn when his uncle, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, saw potential in him. Bhatt’s confidence in Emraan convinced Purnima that her grandson could succeed. Emraan began by assisting Bhatt on the sets of Raaz before being cast in his debut film, Footpath. Recalling Bhatt's tough-love approach, Emraan said, “Mahesh Bhatt was quite clear before starting our first film together. He told me, ‘We are not a charitable association. If you can’t act and if the audience doesn’t like your performance, I won’t hesitate to throw you out of the film.’”

 

Proving himself on Footpath

 

Despite the pressure, Emraan's dedication paid off. His performance in Footpath was well-received, dispelling his initial doubts. He recounted, “My schedule was just seven days for Footpath. However, they were so impressed with my acting that two days later, they held a special screening for my grandmother.” Mahesh Bhatt proudly told Purnima, “You thought he couldn’t act, but there is a star born in the family.”

 

A successful career despite early struggles

 

Since his debut, Emraan Hashmi has gone on to star in numerous successful films, including Murder, Murder 2, Jannat, Raaz 3, and Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. Reflecting on his journey, Emraan acknowledges the tough beginnings and the invaluable support from his family and mentor, Mahesh Bhatt. His story underscores the importance of perseverance and the impact of a strong support system in achieving success in the competitive world of Bollywood.
