As the film completed 30 years on May 22 this year, Bollywood Hungama decided to exclusively speak to Ayesha Jhulka about the film and a lot more

Girija Shettar had shot for the part played by you. She was then replaced and you came on board. Was there an apprehension to step into someone’s shoes?

I don’t know what exactly the issue with regards to her was. The makers were looking for an actor and they saw the rushes of Kurbaan (1991). It was a song featuring me and Salman Khan. After that, Nasir Hussain ji met me. Mansoor Khan walked into the office when I had come to meet. He just saw me and without saying anything, he quietly went into his cabin. Then he called Nasir ji and said, ‘This is the girl I want’. That’s how Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar happened.

Did you ever get a chance to meet Girija Shettar?

No, I have never met her.

Aamir Khan is known to be a prankster. Did he play pranks?

Lots! He played lots of pranks! We used to feel like school children on the sets. He used to play pranks and then I used to run behind him. He played pranks so many times that I can’t even remember. I especially remember that Aamir Khan played the maximum pranks on me on the sets of our house that was made at Film City. All the time, he’d only think of how he can do some mischief. However, I think that kept the atmosphere light and it made it easy for us to work.

The styling of your characters in Khiladi,Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and all other films was quite modest. Was that a conscious effort?

A lot of credit goes to my mother. She used to sit and help in the styling of the costumes, what would suit me etc. And of course, the director also had a say. I feel very comfortable in those kinds of attires. Back then, it was still too much I feel. Nevertheless, the girl-next-door kind of style and image was more comfortable for me, even in person. It helped me a lot as my character in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar was a defined one.

How was it to shoot ‘Pehla Nasha’? The way it was shot and the way it was choreographed by Farah Khan must be a novel experience, right?

It was new. The high-speed camera thing had never happened before. We were really confused about how it’ll look. However, Farah insisted, and it was Mansoor’s conviction that he really wanted it this way. The way Farah explained and the way she choreographed; it became pretty easy for us. Soon, we got a hang of it.

Saroj Khan, I believe, had choreographed the song before. Do you remember how the song was filmed under her guidance?

My part was not shot by Saroj ji. I think it was Aamir’s part that was filmed. My portions were done by Farah only.

Both Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and Khiladi were released almost back to back and even today, people continue to enjoy them…

I think the best part of both Khiladi, and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar is that even today people talk about it. They continue to see the film and hear the songs. Even the youngsters are watching it. It’s a good feeling when young people come and tell me that they saw Khiladi or Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and how much they loved it.

Pooja Bedi’s daughter Alaya F said that if a remake of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar is made, she’d like to play the role played by you and not the one played by her mother…

Really (Smiles)? That’s very sweet. She’s quite a sweetheart. I have seen her as a child. We had done one of her birthday parties at her place. So that’s sweet of her to say that (laughs).

If a remake of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar is made, who should be cast in the roles played by you, Aamir Khan, Pooja Bedi and Deepak Tijori?

My god, I have never thought of that. I can’t even think of anyone. I don’t think anybody can be replaced. If a remake must be made, we’ll play the older versions of our characters!

Are you still in touch with the team members of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar?

I met Aamir at the reunion of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar a couple of years back. We all met there. It was nostalgic. Then, we gathered in the evening as well at Farah’s house. I keep meeting Pooja on and off in Goa. Even with Mansoor, I am in touch. However, to meet the whole gang was really something.

Director Mansoor Khan has moved to Coonoor…

Yes, and I keep telling him that he has to come back and make films again! He told me that he’ll make Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’s sequel. I replied, ‘Yes, please do that. Please start writing’!

You also make short films. Did you make any more short films after A Little Pause?

A Little Pause got about 21 awards in various festivals. The second short film which I made was about the environment. It’s called The Little Parent. So I made these 2 films and I am planning to make another one very soon. I am writing it.

Any plans to make feature films?

My husband has written a wonderful thing. So, let’s see. We’ll be doing something about it very soon.

You have a show coming up on Amazon Prime Video named Hush Hush

I have signed 3 web shows. I have already shot for all of them. 2 are for Amazon Prime Video and one is for Endemol.

Any final thoughts?

Today is a very wonderful day. It seems like 30 years have just flown by. Actually, it’s more than 30 years since we shot for these films way before the release, obviously. So for me, it’s like completing 34-35 years in the industry. And now doing these web shows has made me feel so welcome. I took a gap in between. But I feel web shows are fantastic and would love to do good series and films.
