23 years of Shaheed-E-Azam: Sonu Sood states, “Playing Bhagat Singh is no joke”

Two big films on Shaheed Bhagat Singh – Rajkumar Santoshi’s The Legend Of Bhagat Singh and Guddu Dhanoa’s 23rd March 1931 Shaheed – released on June 7, 2002. Starring Ajay Devgn and Bobby Deol in the role of Bhagat Singh respectively, it was looked upon as a major clash at the box office. However, both the movies underperformed and it was Yash Raj Films’ Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, which released on the same day, that emerged victorious.

But a week before the two aforementioned Bhagat Singh movies released, a lesser-known film on the martyr had hit the theatres in the form of Sukumar Nair’s Shaheed-E-Azam. It starred Sonu Sood in the role of the late revolutionary. As the film’s 23rd anniversary takes place today, Sood got talking about it in an interview with us.

 

Recalling the experience, Sonu Sood said, “Sir, playing Bhagat Singh is no joke. The actor has to have an image, a dignity, a sobriety, an imposing personality. If I had any doubts about my ability to play this braveheart, I would have said an immediate no. But I felt I was disciplined and dedicated enough to play Bhagat Singh without people saying, ‘Isski auqat kya hai?’ I think I managed to hold my own in that dream role. Whenever I was asked about that one role which I would like to play, I would say, Bhagat Singh. My wish came true.”

 

Shaheed-E-Azam starred Manav Vij, Dev Gill and Raj Zutshi in the roles of revolutionaries Sukhdev, Rajguru and Chandrashekhar Azad respectively.
