By Fenil Seta -

2020 was a year that stood out mostly for unpleasant reasons. In a bid to understand this tumultuous and unforgettable year, we at Bollywood Hungama on a lighter note decided to redevelop the English alphabets from A-Z keeping in mind the important events of the year

#2020Recap: A to Z of Bollywood in 2020

The popular news anchor broke all limits as he attacked Bollywood as if it’s the worst industry on the planet. The way he dared Salman Khan to ‘come out of hiding’ was laughable.

B – Boycott

It was the year when a slightest discomfort or offence resulted in Twitterati (mostly comprising bots) asking for a boycott of celebs, films, ads, web series etc. At first, it scared the industry but later, it just became a laughworthy exercise.

C – Coronavirus

The dreaded, infectious disease spread its wings everywhere. Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, Rakul Preet Singh, Genelia Deshmukh, Malaika Arora, Arjun Kapoor, Harshvardhan Rane, Tamannaah Bhatia, Aftab Shivdasani, S S Rajamouli, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Kanika Kapoor etc were tested positive for Covid-19. Thankfully, almost all of them recovered and are now fine.

D – Drugs

Prominent actors like Deepika Padukone, Shraddha Kapoor, Rakul Preet Singh, Sara Ali Khan, Arjun Rampal etc were summoned after they were allegedly found to be involved in consuming illegal drugs. TV artists Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa even had to spend time in jail for drugs consumption.

E – Eighty-Three (’83) and Sooryavanshi

The two of the most awaited films of 2020 couldn’t release due to the Coronavirus-induced lockdown. The good news is that both these biggies are expected to release in cinemas before March 31, 2021.

F – Fight between Diljit Dosanjh and Kangana Ranaut

The Punjabi actor-singer won hearts nationwide as he gave back to Kangana Ranaut on Twitter after the latter spread rumours that women are being paid Rs. 100 to participate in the farmer’s protest.

G – Gulabo Sitabo

This was the first big film of the year that released directly on digital, thus bringing in a new trend in the industry.

H – Harshad Mehta

The infamous, deceased stock broker became a talking point yet again thanks to Scam 1992, easily the most popular and most talked-about web series of the year.

I – Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor

Both the stalwarts died one after another and that too very suddenly, leaving fans in shock and tears.

J – JNU

Deepika Padukone marched into the prestigious Delhi University to show support to the students, leading many to what else but ‘boycott’ her film, Chhapaak.

K – Kangana Ranaut

The motormouth actress increased her irritating behaviour by many notches. She arrived officially on Twitter and took pangas with chief ministers and celebs alike.

L – Laxmii

It was the biggest Hindi film to release digitally. The response was mostly negative and the controversies surrounding the film’s title affected the film’s hype.

M – Maldives

Almost every TV and Bollywood celeb packed their bags to relax at this beach paradise, one of the few places in the world where the Coronavirus impact was negligible.

N – Nude run of Milind Soman

The dashing, sexy actor-model ran sans clothes on a Goa beach. The picture accelerated the heartbeats of many and also raised the tempers of the moral police.

O – OTT

In the absence of film releases, people found solace in web series. Numerous shows like Scam 1992, Paatal Lok, Mirzapur 2, Aarya, Asur etc were very well received

P – Pathan

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan finally broke his ‘vanvas’ from acting and signed the action entertainer of Yash Raj Films. His look got leaked on the first day of shoot and broke the internet.

Q – Quality shows of bygone era make a comeback

With TV shoots halting in the wake of lockdown, popular 80s and 90s were aired on TV channels and got record ratings. This is especially in the case of ‘Mahabharat’ and ‘Ramayan’.

R – Rhea Chakraborty

The girlfriend of Sushant Singh Rajput was maligned and she became the national villain. Surprisingly, all the evidence put forth by people to prove that she ruined Sushant’s life and murdered him were either fake or couldn’t be proved.

S – Sushant Singh Rajput

The popular actor died reportedly by suicide. The criticism that the industry received due to his demise was of epic proportions.

T – Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior

It was the only blockbuster of 2020 and one of the few films that released in cinemas. Box office 2020 looks slightly respectable thanks to this Ajay Devgn-Saif Ali Khan-Kajol starrer

U – Ultra benevolent Sonu Sood

The actor with a heart of gold won hearts (and how) with his social work. He ensured that the migrants reached home safely, arranged surgeries for the poor, sent mobile phones so that those kids who couldn’t afford online learning don’t have miss out on education etc. The manner in which he used to reply on Twitter to those seeking help also added to his fame and love.

V – VPF

The feud between the producers and multiplex chains and exhibitors over the virtual print fee came out in public this year. As of now, it’s in control but a second round is expected in early 2021.

W – Wash, clean, cook

The lockdown prevented house helps from coming to work. Hence, our actors became ‘aatma nirbhar’ and began to do household chores on their own. They proudly flaunted about it on social media.

X – (e)Xcessive maligning of celebs

Various celebs like Alia Bhatt, Karan Johar, Deepika Padukone, Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan etc were abused and trolled massively due to the belief that they are responsible for the ‘murder’ of Sushant Singh Rajput.

Y – Yashraj Mukhate

His rap songs ‘Rasode Mein Kaun Tha’ and ‘Biggini Shoot’ made him a household name.

Z – Zee Studios

The reputed studio took the initiative of releasing Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari in cinemas on Diwali at a time when no other producer was willing to go for a theatrical release.
