No deewanapan!

 

It was freezing cold at the box-office last week. The indifferent response to the sole significant release, EKK DEEWANA THA, proved that the moviegoer was in no mood to venture into cineplexes and devote three hours of his/her precious life to this long-drawn-out prem kahani. What comes as a surprise is that the film had everything going in its favor -- a young cast, impressive names behind the camera [Gautham Menon, A.R. Rahman, Javed Akhtar], a popular song ['Hosanna'] and most importantly, aggressive and effective promotion by Fox Star Studios… But the business was alarmingly low from its opening show onwards and it refused to show an effectual escalation over the weekend.

EKK DEEWANA THA has been made twice in the past, in Tamil and Telugu. Gautham Menon, who directed the two versions [including Hindi], must be supremely confident of the Hindi version, since the Tamil as well as the Telugu versions were money spinners. That brings me to a vital question: Do remakes of successful South Indian films guarantee success? Not all films can be expected to re-write history.

 

A section of the film industry is of the opinion that EKK DEEWANA THA lacked star power to lure audience in hordes. A tiny section also feels that titles beginning with 'Ek' don't work. But I'd like to remind that EK PHOOL DO MALI, EK HI BHOOL and EK DUUJE KE LIYE, besides so many other films beginning with 'Ek', have worked in the past. There's also this myth that 'sad endings' don't work. But the biggest love story of all times, MUGHAL-E-AZAM, and even QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK had 'sad endings'. Seriously, why do we start making excuses when a movie fails?

 

Hopefully, things should brighten this weekend, with two prominent films -- JODI BREAKERS and TERE NAAL LOVE HO GAYA -- vying for audience attention. The respective film-makers have promoted the films to the optimum and the songs have already caught the fancy of listeners. Now let's await the audience verdict!
