Sonam Kapoor to star in Neerja Bhanot biopic

Of late, the trend of biopics is gaining a lot of momentum in Bollywood. While the recent ones have been concentrating on sports and eminent artists, this time around, the biopic in question is that of a senior flight crew member, who became the youngest recipient of the bravery award, Ashok Chakra.

 

Sonam Kapoor has been roped in to play the role of Neerja Bhanot who was the senior crew member in famous airlines PAN AM when four terrorists hijacked a flight in 1986 and she died a martyr trying to save the lives of three children whilst shielding them from bullets. The PAN AM Flight 73 from Mumbai to Frankfurt was hijacked when it landed at Karachi at 5 am. While Neerja alerted the cockpit crew about the danger, the three member team of Americans which included the pilot, co-pilot and the flight engineer eloped from the plane since it was halted at the runway. Hence Neerja devised a plan to help the passengers escape. When the terrorists asked the flight attendants and crew members to collect the passports of the passengers in order to identify them, Neerja and her colleagues decided to hide them. However, after 17 hours of the hijack, the terrorists started firing and Neerja helped many passengers to escape from the emergency exit. Instead of thinking of her own safety, she helped the kids and others in the flight and died after she took the bullets that were fired at the kids. It is being said that Neerja was a model during the initial days of her career and she shifted to Mumbai after her arranged marriage in 1985 hit rock-bottom.

The biopic has been tentatively titled Neerja and will be directed by ad filmmaker Ram Madhvani. We hear that Sonam Kapoor will start shooting for the film once she wraps up the promotions of Dolly Ki Doli and completes the schedule of Sooraj Barjatya's Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.
